(From Onr Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, Hill receive prompt attention.) - HOMES FOR WORKERS. Dec. 27. At a meeting of the Borough Council on Monday night, the matter of providing homes for workers was discussed, and the Mayor (Mr. W. J. McMillan) moved: —That the Town Clerk be authorised to obtain as much information as possible re plans, specifications, and probable cost of workers' homes, the Council approving of a policy of building the proposed homes on the Council's own reserves. That on receipt of the information asked for the Council invite applications from probable tenants giving first opportunity to its own employees, and in the event of a satisfactory number of applications being received the Council apply to the Government for a loan up to £lo,#oo. It was pointed out by the Mayor that the proposal would not only be of benefit to those who were unable to obtain homes by other means, but to the borough. It would give a certain amount of revenue, and if the tenants had leases with the right of renewal it would be almost as good as the freehold to them. The motion was seconded by Cr. Lawson.
In reply to a question, the Town Clerk stated that the Council had forty or fifty sites available for building. After a general discussion the motion was carried.
CONTROL OF DOMAINS. A letter from the Commissioner of Crown Lands to the Borough Council was accompanied by a copy of regulations drafted by the Domain Board fon observance by the Council in the control of the Domains. It was.suggested by the Board that the Council should least £SOO on the Domains, exclusive of rents; and that a caretaker should be engaged. The desire of the Domain Board to save the Domains from a continuance of that neglect they have suffered from at their own hands amused the Borough Council, and it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, to inform the Department that the Council had already agreed to comply with the regulations forwarded, and that it could not see its way to adopt this Board's regulations.
