PERSONAL.

Mr K. E. Stark, Christchurch city electrical engineer, has resigned. Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, of Carterton, is at present ill, having suffered a heart seizure a few days ago.

Mr. Gavin Wallace, who settled in the Mangere district, some miles from Onehunga, about sixty years ago, recently died at the age of 81. Mrs. Kirkby, of New Plymouth, has received a cable from her eldest Bon, Lieutenant W,ynn Kirkby, late of the Royal Naval Division, that he lias sailed for New Zealand on the Ruapehu which is due to arrive at Wellington about January 25.

Mr. N. L. Macbeth, formerly manager and secretary of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd., who recently returned from a visit to England, has accepted the position of general manager of the Arm of Armour and Co., of Australasia, Ltd. Mr. A. Marshall, who was for twelve years sub-editor of the Otago Daily Times, has resigned in order to take up dairy farming on the Otago Peninsula. As a token of esteem he was presented with a purse of sovereigns from the company and his fellow employees. Among those who arrived by the Niagara last week was Mr. Herbert B. Booth, second son of the late General Booth. He is also well remembered in New Zealand as the successful inaugurate of a wonderfully progressive policy, while he was in active command of the Salvation Army's operations in Australia and New Zealand, and "proved himself a most able administrator.

At the examinations held at Wellington in November last, Mr. F. W. Sullivan, of the Public Trust Office, Wellington, was successful in completing his solicitor's examination. Mr. Sullivan was formerly a pupil of the State School, Pirongia, Waikato, also of the Sacred Heart College, Ponsonby. He is a son of Mrs. Sullivan, postmistress at Urenui.

Mr. A. B. ,T. Irvine, Auckland manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, having reached retiring age, has decided to relinquish Ilia position as from January 31. Mr. J. H. C. Bond, at present general traffic manager at the company's head office, Duhedin, has been appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr. N. Falla will succeed Mr. Bond as general traffic manager at Dunedin. Mr. V. Johnson, manager for the Union Company at Sydney, and Mr. C. Hughes, manager at Melbourne, have exchanged positions.

At the closing of the Hawera school last week, the girls of the sixth standard presented their teacher, Miss Sartori, with a handsome suede leather handbag, and the pupils of standard five presented Miss Bourke with a lovely writing companion. Miss Eva Lynsky (dux) and Miss Mrytle Wood, on behalf of the senior girls, presented the headmaster, Mr. Struck, with a gentleman's wallet. All the recipients suitably thanked the girls for their kind expression of appreciation.

Mr. A. F. Nicoll has been appointed director of the Christchurch School of Art. Mr. Nicoll, who is thirty-three years of age,' was born and educated in Christchurch. He was for some time on the teaching staff of the Auckland Art School, and afterwards conducted ft studio in Edinburgh. He was returning to New Zealand when war broke out, and enlisted in the 3rd Reinforcement. He saw considerable service on Gallipoli and in France, and lost a leg at the battle of the Somme. A profitable butchery business is advertised for sale on page I by Messrs W. H. and J. McGarry, 31tham.
