TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

NEW FORD MOTOR GARAGE. The rapid growth in the motor business in Taranaki has made heavy demands for garage and workshop accommodation in New Plymouth, and the latest improvement in this direction is the large and spacious new premises erected for, and now occupied by, Messrs 11. Derby and Co., the local agents for the Ford machines. These premises, which are on the main thoroughfare, right opposite the Red Post Furnishing Warehouse, are up-to-date in every particular. The Devon Street frontage is more than usually attractive. A large wide entrance gives access to the general garage accommodation, in which eighty cars may be parked, and any one can be taken out without disturbing the other machines. In an emergency, possibly over a hundred cars could be stored. A turn table has been provided as part of the equipment of this modern establishment, and this is capable of carrying cars up to the largest models in use. The place is well lighted from three large skylights. There is also a Bowser plant for oil and a similar benzine plant is to be erected as soon as it arrives from the makers, Alongside the front entrance is a large showroom with 30ft x 18ft floor space. This is lighted by a large plate glass window 12ft Bin x 10ft, and there are large swinging doors on one side through which cars can be brought from the garage into the showroom. Behind the showrooxft are the two main offices, which are furnished with the latest appliances and equipment.' for the efficient handling of a comprehensive business. At the back of the offices ■is the storeroom for spare parts, which is heavily stocked, and in which there is also a dark room for ;he storage of tyres. A feature of this section is the provision of ready assembled units in order to facilitate the quick re-eommis-sion of a damaged car. This even includes a spare engine. If such goes out of gear, within two hours the spare one can be fitted and the machine be in running order again, while the original engine is being repaired. This should prove of great value to those who are running trucks and lorries. Further back still are Ihe ladies' cloak room and conveniences. These various departments are all finished in oiled wood, with fibrous plaster ceilings. At the rear of the garage there is a benzine store and men's conveniences, and the yard between the garage and the workshop is all concreted to facilitate the washing down process. The workshop itself is one of the best equipped establishments in the district. There are live pits, each provided with electric light, the most modern machinery, including a press for pressing on solid tyres, a room for battery work, a lumber room, and workshop office: It is splendidly lighted by six large skylights. There are eight skilled mechanics permanently employed, and altogether the shop is capifhle of dealing with any class of work that may be entrusted to the Sinn. One of the features of the premises is that there is a clear run right through from Devon Street to Courtenay Street. For night purposes there have been installed fifty 100-candle power lights, which should produce a brilliant effect. Over the footpath on to which the garage faces there has been suspended a verandah across the whole of the building, and above this there has been attached to the upper portion of the building a cement casting of the fore-carriage of a Ford car. This is a particularly effective sign, and instantly denotes the Ford agency. The building was designed by Mr. T. H. Bates, architect, New Plymouth, and erected by Messrs. Boon Bros., New Plymouth, the contract price being £5325 10s.

The business in new ears is said to he progressing rapidly. The latest Fords are fitted with the standard Ford selfstarting attachment, which includes full and dim lighting switch.
