The excitement or the past few days, wliai with the elections and the (apparently) never- ' ending licensing wrangle, has quite overshadowed the forthcoming holiday meetings hut now that the trouble is over sportsmei are looking forward >lo a round of sport am • relaxation during tlio'- next fortnight. Tin .post week's doings nnny be dismissed with t mere eipresslou of gratification at the returt of so many well-known sportsmen to Parliament, and the triumph of liberty over oppression. J .The holiday programme Includes rrt-e meetings at Auckland, Palmerston, Duredin, Nev Plymouth, Stratford, Mnrton, Hastings, unci t • number of minor centres, and In tills resper Taranaki is we-'l catered for. Splendid ac- • ceptances have been received for the Taranak J C. Christina a meeting and the Stratford R.C • annual meeting, and four days' fine sport mnj • be safely anticipated. Both clubs are doln* their utmost to- make their gatherings recorc > ones, and Taranaki sortsmen will have no excuse for going outside their own province foi amusement at Christmas or In the New Year. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Taranaki J.C. Christmas meeting opens ? on Friday. .1 The Strntford R.C will race on the followlnc t Thursday and Friday, t Harry Kayner is'doing the Taranaki meet- >• ings with Carme) Arch, Simqa, Nomallne - and Signorelia. Brother Walter is brlngWij p Zi'ia up. i When Alir Cerise ran second to Oasbag at WondvDlo she carried iSlbs overweight. Tommj Longs fiiiy reads well ir. tho Nursery Handie cap at Awapunl with Tat. A Wanganui scribe states that Nobleman b ;1 In great fettle. This writer is informed thai ? " 10 V( -'- v opposite is the case, and that th( a is "nil to pieces." From the Epsom (Eng.) Derby to <1 hack race - at Wnndvillt* is a hip jump, hut this la tlu p record of ilu- imported Arrowsmith. In tlu v Old Dart he started nine times in ftrst- - class Taccs, and ran second over a mfie and a t mile and a furlong respectively. e Riecurton stables will ,he very strongly repr resented at- the Auckland Sumimet meeting - ftf«son has taken up three. H. Cutts live,-ant 1 i\ O'Donnell six. The crowd include Gloaming, . Roasuiy, Kartj Moorfowl, Misa Mimic, Bon#ter
and Kilmoon, and they promise to tear off the Digffest cheques at the gathering. The entries received for the Porangahu meet* ing are poorer than usual, and a sporting friends ta?la me that they are ail maidens, so, it Is probably & unique record for eren. Porangahu. Dusky Evo and Snub hare been galloping os well as any of the! Auckland Cup candidates already at FJ'Jlerslle, but Karo put in a nice performance bofore leaving Rlccurton, and it looks as If she will start in the two miles race. TJncle Ned is going along quietly at Avondale, and a fair amount of money is being dribbled on hint at long prices. The hardness tif the tracks at Eliersllo is teKHng on pome of the older division, and they may not be as forward on the day as their trainers could wish. Moorfowl has been giving Harry Cutts some trouble lately, and Oslaught has lightened up as a result of hard racing at JUccaTton. However, Moorfowl, Miss "Mimic, Winter Wind, and Mac Duff should pay their way. The nomination forms supplied by most of tho clubs at present are quite unsuitable for trainers of horsoa of different ownership, tnd their fining up is an unnecessarily tedious job. What is wanted ia a form with spaco for owner's name, and colors of owner. . Then the whole business might be put on one sheet, lnfitead of having to fill up tho sheet supplied, and a number of others of home ma facturc. Of course trainers may ootain more forms on application, but it would be a good idea (while the present forms are in use), to supply extra copies to trainers whose horses run in various nominations. Jockey "Charlie" Emerson had a big send-off before he joined the Manuka for Sydney last week, en route to England, where he will try his horsemanship. It Is pleasing to lmow that this popular little fellow Is, to quote a Wellington scribe, *'so well armed with credentials that he cannot lack for opportunities to display his skill." Emerson will arrive in England a little before the opening of the racing season, and his progress a'. Home will lio watched with interest by hosts of New Zealanders. Depredation appears to Ue likely to staTt favorite in the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth on Friday, and will take u lot of beating. The Plying Handicap should see another strong order in Esthonla well in the firing Hne at the finish. They say mat Khartoum cannot get beaten in the Hurdles, but Te Toa not only jumps well, but goes fast. All the fields should be first-class, and an enjoyable and successful meeting is assured. Oi]r Stratford friends promise us a couple nf good days' sport in the Now Year, and, as the acceptances show, fields will be rather above the& average, both as regards quality and ' quantity. The Stratford eoursa is In good order, and w'l arrangements are complet* to insure & tfcotd muting.
