The Government has decided to withdraw the bread subsidy, which is costing 160 millions sterling. It would have been even higher, but for favorable contracts in Australia and America, which had now ended. American wheat costing 100s the Government had been selling to French bakers at 40s. The price sf bread will nov be about doubled. The old scheme resulted in terrible waste of bread, which wa* sometimes cheaper than potatoes. Agriculturists used bread to feed pigs, chlekens and rabbits.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable 4"°.
