THE CONTINUANCE MAJORITY.

CONTINUANCE LEADING., MAJORITY OP 1590. fiETUBNS STILL INCOMPLETE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The latest figures in the Natio. 1 fieferendum are:— Continuance -.. .. . . ... 217,161 State Control . 28,737 Prohibition ........y 244,30? Majority for Continuance 1590 Four districts to come, and seamen ahd soldiers' votes.

IABGE DISCREPANCY IN RETURNS. # MANY VOTES TO COME. (By Wire.-jOwn Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. The result of the licensing poll will be 1* doubt for some time, but fhe figures available late to-night indicate that the continuance issue has an advantage. Fjuhibition Party say that continuance and State purchase combined gW* a majority against prohibition of -fW rotes. 4 The official returns make the Jnajotity ajjout 1400, but there appears to be an error of 1000 in the official returns from Waikato. The probibitionfato state that their total in Waikato jwas 4214. The official return is 3216, there is a discApancy of about 1000 between the electoral votes ana the wcensing rotes in the official Waikato so the prohibitionists probably Are rig&t. There are still some small returns to come front districts, alid there are about 20j000 votes to be counted, comprising soldiers, seaSneh, and absent voters. The »fflci»l. estimate of the dumber of soldiers. voting abroad and at sea is ■Sm9. TO# number of seamen's permits '8 .about 18D0, and the number of absent voters permits issued is about 16,000. The number of permits actually issued will hot be known until" the amcM c(*mts are made. This will not be until after the holiday?. In some cases the number of absent voters is much larger than usual. Absent voters have tended in the past to give a margin in favor of prohibition, but soldiers are expected to show a big majority for continuance. The chances are now in favor of continuance, owing to thfl ftilttfe of prohibition to score ail absolute Majority of the votes polled.
