GENERAL ELECTIONS

A GOVERNMENT VICTORY

DEFEAT OF SIR JOSEPH t WARD FOR AWARUA

SIR MINES CARROL, HOH. G. W. RUSSELL % 7 MAJOR HIKE LOSE THEIR SEATS

LABOR'S BIG CAINS

Though the result of the elections is yet somewhat obscure, a Government victory is assured. A feature of the polls is the ad vance made by the Labor Party, Utidch has now twelve representatives in Parliament, including the Ifcdttettident Labor members and the extremists. The Liberal Party.hae lost ground, and the Government has more than maintain-ed-its' position. The position appears to be that the Government has over forty certain supporters, and it will thus have a clear majority in the Parliament of seventy-eight members. The surprise of the day is the defeat of Sir Joseph Ward, who -was beaten by Mr. J. R. Hamilton (Reform) by 777 votes. Two of Ms lieutenants, the Hon. G. W. Rpssell and Sir James Carroll, Wwe also defeated. Colonel Mitchell beat the Labor member, Mr. B. Semple. she most exciting feature of the in Taranaki was provided Et Stratford, where Mr. R. Masters (Liberal) has a lead of seventy votes on the Hon. J. B. Hine (Reform). There is one small return to come, and 162 absent voters'.permits have been issued, so that the result will be in doubt for some days. Mr. S. G. Smith (Independent Labor) retained the Taranaki seat by a large majority; Jfr 0 Hawken keeps the Egmont seat for the Reform Party; and. Mr. W. D. Powdrell (Reform) was elected for Patea by 123 votes. All bf the three lady candidates were defeated.

THE TARANAKI SEAT. ! MR. SMITH ELECTED. The poll in the Taranaki electorate proceeded with smoothness throughout the whole day, testifying to the thoroughness with which the Returning Officer (JflT. J&tm Jordan) had planned out the wCrk, tod also to the ability of the staff of iijretfet and poll clerks which he had engaged for the' day. In the town it was eviddQt from the early morning that the poll mold be & fairly heavy one, ears bringing a steady stream of votes to the booth* all the day. With four parties wostipg to get electors to the booths, it m not surprising that there Was such evidence of activity, and that the poll ] m a fairly heavy one, the total number of rotes cast being 7175, as against 5520 at the bye-election last year, and 6317 in 1914. The returns from the various booths began to come in at an early hour, and it was goon evident that Smith was forging to the front, and as succeeding returns cane to hand the result became a foregfee conclusion. At one stage Mr. (Smith's lead was 1000, but at the final the majority for the Independent candidate was BBL Jn the licensing poll it was generally expected that Prohibition would secure a majonty in Tarnaaki,, and this anticipation w»s justified, the majority being I*oo. CANDIDATES' SPEECHES. Wkm the Ml figures were put up there were enthusiastic cheers for Mr. Smith, which were renewed when he mounted the scaffolding, with his opponent, to thank the electors for the position in wMch they had placed him. Mr. Smith said he thanked those who had voted for Urn from the bottom of his heart fgr the lienor they had done him. A year ago their trust was placed in him, and for this renewed trust he thanked them, as well aa for the opportunity ol further working for the land of his birth. He thanked his committee for their work on his behalf, especially the ladies. He hoped none of them would have any regrets. He also thanked the press foi hßVing given him a good run this time They recognised that twelve months age the people had placed their confident in him, and now that confidence hai been .renewed. He intended to work ii common justice for the whole commun jty, and-he hoped that in three years

believed that there would be a new Government in New Zealand, and he provoked a big cheer by telling the electors ;hat at that stage Masters was leading ior Stratford, Astbury for Egmont, and Morrison for Patea.* At Mr. Smith's call, cheers were then given for Mr. Buckeridge. Cheers were again given for Mr. Smith, and also foT Mrs. Smith. Mr. Buckeridge, who was also received with the utmost good humor, congratulated Mr. Smith on his well-earned victory. The fight had been hard, but it had been clean. He entered late, but had put up a strenuous fight. He thanked his committees, especially the ladies, and was sure they recognised he had put up a good fight. Renewed cheers were given for Mr Smith, at the call of Mr. Buckeridge. THE STRATFORD SEAT. KEEN INTEREST IN CLOSE ' . , OONTEST. The fight for the Stratford seat das been hard and keen, and though both sides professed confidence, those who ) could view the contest without :partisßn- | ship were 'doubtful aa to the final result, and there was a feeling among these that the voting would be close. Both sides had shown pood organisation, and the candidates concluded their campaign with exceptional energy. There was every evidence throughout election day that the people were deeply interested in the poll. No sooner had the booths opened than the voting q»mmenced. and before noon a largo number had recorded their votes. The busiest time was between 2 and 3 o'clock, and by 5 o'clock about 1200 votes had been recorded at the Town Hall and 400 at the Courthouse. A large number of people congregated outside the Town Hall during the whole day. The red and black colors of the Reform Party were very conspicuous, 1 but the Liberals had no colors, prefer--1 Ing to he without any distinguishm? 1 badge. Each of the parties had office! 1 close to the Town Hall, and a number ■ of ladies kindly provided refreshments ' for tho returning officer and his large 0* fellaKfc

The Hon. .T. B. Hine mingled with his Supporters during the afternoon, and thefe Were many conveyances to carry voters to the polling booths, but the great majority made no use of these, which Beemed to be in excess of requirements. Mr. R. Masters spent the day in different parts of the country, returning to Stratford at about 5 o'clock. The details of the voting are as follows: Hine. Masters. MR. MASSEY'S THANKS, ;

FOR CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT!! By Telegraph.—Pres* Aiaoclation. ,\L Wellington, Last Night. Mr. Massey appeared at the Dominio# result board shortly after 11 pjn., hi* appearance being the signal for a great outburst of cheers. He said that though the election returns were not yet complete, a majority for the Gov» eminent was assured. He wasted to thank the electors throughout the Do* minion for the expression of confident* in the Government which had been «• corded at the polls that day. Many experienced politicians had fallen out of the ranks, and their places had been taken by others, but he felt certain the verdict of the electors would be accepted' tin a proper spirit. He believed the services of the men who had been un« successful that day Would not be lost to the public, but that agiin they would be found doing their best, as they" had done in the past, in the interertf of the Dominion. They would have heard that one Minister had been 4* feated and three ex-Ministers, also several men who had taken a very important part in the councils of the Dominion. He believed that a substantial majority of members bad been returned to support law and order, and, bo far as he could understand, a substantial majority had also been returned to support the policy of development, In <on> nection with reconstruction, which had been put forward )>y the Government. Mr. Massey added: "I hope now the election is practically over, we shall 1 forget the incidents of to-day and any little bitterness, and that whatever our politics may be, we shall be found working together, forgetting our party politics, and all doing our level best for the country to which we belong.

SIR JOSEPH WARD. OPPONENTS METHODS CRITICISED. DOWNFALL OF OLD LIBERALS REGRETTED. Wellington, Last Night. Sir Joseph Ward addressed the crowd from the balcony of The Times' office. At the outset lie wis greeted with sporadic cheers and hoots, but these soon subsided, and he was permitted to speak without interruption. Sir Joseph Ward expressed regret at the defeat of his party. So far as his own defeat was concerned, he viewed the matter philosophically. He personally had no regrets, and wsus not going to' complain of his reverse. At the same time, in reviewing the whole election, he could not compliment his Opponents on the methods they employed in order to gain their victory. He had served a very long time in the public life of the Dominion, and he wished to tender his deep thanks to the people who had stood by him and his pqjHy. He looked upon the position qtrtte dispassionately, and it had to be borne in mind that it would probably take a day or two before the definite state of the parties was known. He was anxious to see that the outcome would be the formation of a Btrong and wise Government in the general interests of the people of New Zealand, because he realised that the country had before it very difficult tasks, which would take all tlic brains and all tlie efforts of the new Parliament. He assured them that, throughout the whole time he had been in public life, it had been his effort always to do tlie right thing. There were those who didn't see eye to eye with him in politics who were disposed to take the worst view of a man's efforts in. public life. That was one of the worst, features in -the public life of this country.
