THE CEMENT SHORTAGE.
DUE TO INSUFFICIENT COAL. I By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. In common with other parts of the Dominion, Dunedin h also suffering from' the shortage of cement. The manager of the Milbum Lime and Cement Co., in discussing the shortage with a pre*s representative, put his finger on what appeared to be the real reason for the shortage, when he said it was due to local manufacturers' inability to obtain sufficient supplies, of bituminous coal for burning the cement clinker?. The New Zealand cement mills now operating have plants that are capable of producing from 16,000 to 20,000 tons per month, and the demand throughout the Dominion is about 8500 tons a month. Owing chiefly to the coal shortage, the cement mills have only been able to supply 700 tons per month since June last and the accumulation of shortage has now made the position serious.
