Meagher was committed for trial for the murder of his wife, who wa* round with her head battered. [A cable received from Sydney on November 21 said: "A mysterious tragedy has occurred at Coogee. John Meagher, a man of independent means, who was formerly a racehorse »wner, of Melbourne, states that he left his wife in bed at one o'clock yesterday. He returned at four o'clock and found his wife in bed with her head battered. A considerable quantity of jewellery was in the house, but it had not been touched. There is no apparent motive for the crime. ,The husband has been arrested and charged with murder, bail being refused."]
