Mr. A. H. JohnatOne, who has been in New Plymouth on Supreme Court business, returns to Auckland by the Rata wa to-night. The Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, who. has been presiding over the Supreme Court sessions in New Plymouth, returns to Wellington by to-day's mail train.
Dr. Gibb, of Wellington, is leaving shortly for Scotland by the Arawa. Dr. Gibb is going Home at the request of the General Assembly to endeavour to secure 20 ministers and 20 home missionaries to supply the local needs. Widespread regret will he felt throughout the district at the death of Mr. J. P. Keen, a well-known citizen, which took place at Hawera yesterday afternoon after an illness of some weeks (says the Star). The late Mr. Keen bad been a resident of Hawera for many years, and he was actively associated with much of the public life of the town. He was an enthusiastic fireman, and a few years ago he retired from the position of superintendent of the local brigade, of which he had been a member for many years. He also took part in municipal affairs, and for a time served %n the Borough Council. The deceased yas & prominent member of the local Vrnida Lodge, and was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, attaining; the Tank of PJtf. He was an enthusiastic fowler, helm? an old member of the local plub. He aieo took an interest in musical matters, being a member of the Methodist CTvurch choir, and also of the Vale Choir. The late Mr. Keen was of ?, gen!a>" disposition, and he won a large irde of friends in Hawera and district. Bia Widow and grown-up family will itaVe the sincere sympathy of the comißiunity in their bereavement.
