STRATFORD.

Harold Tristram, winner of the Bayly scholarship in 1916, was presented by Tyrer with the medal which accom* panics the scholarship, at the Stratford school concert last evening. To win the Bayly scholarship, it was explained by Mr. Tyrer, a boy had to pass a severe test in ordinary school work, and had also to compete against the elite of Taranak} boys in sports, so that both sides of the character had to be developed. The scholarship was not actually taken up by Master Tristram, but the Rugby Union, in consideration of his performance, decided to award the medal.
Mr. H. H. Sharp, District Engineer for the Public Work-j Department at Stratford, left, this morning for Wellington, to which place he has"been transferred. His successor is Captain W. B. Campbell. Judgment was given at the Magistrate's Court this morning for plaintiff by default in the following civil cases: D Butchart (Mr. Tyrer) v. R. V. Edwards, claim for £2 10s, and costs 19s; Strat-' ford Hospital Board (Mr. Young) v. Victor MUcTiewski, 'claimi for £1 Bs, with costs 7s; Same v. T. McDonald! claim for £23 14s, with costs £3 4s. ,The General Manager of Railways has telegraphed the Hon. J. B. Hine as follows: "Regret Unforseen circumstances preclude possibility of visiting Stratford this' week. Have, however, arranged definitely to leave here on Thursday 18th, and will be at Stratford on the 19th inst."
It was stated by Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., at the sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day, that he had recently been advised that he would probablv have to preside at the Hawera and Manaia sittings, and in view of this it would not be possible yet to fix the regular day for local court sittings for the coming year. The amount taken at the bazaar and sale of work, in aid of the D.H.S. fujls, was about £2OO. Miss A. Fitzgerald won the pig with a guess of 24V 2 lbs, the correct weight. The weight of the sheep was HOlbs, and Mr J. Anderson, who guessed 1021bs, was the winner. A stepping-the-ehain competition was won by Mr. F. McCarthy. A social and dance was held at the Agaere public hall last evening Sor-'s were sung by Miss Sheahan, Miss Walker, Mr. Aitken and Mr. Thompson. A recitation was given by Mr. T. Thompson. The dance music was provided by Mrs Bianchi and Mr. Parker, extras being played by Miss Walker and Messrs Coleman, Smith and Walsh. Messrs R Walker and C. Baker discharged the duties of M.'sC.
A dance will be held in the Town Hall, Stratford, on New Year's night, when the music will be by Fox's orchestra.
