"Was assistant Town Clerk for some years at Nelson, leaving there to join his ff,\ brother as a surveyor in Taranaki in 1889. Entered into partnership with Mr. C. A. Wilkinson in Eltham in 1891, and while with him was instrumental in starting the Eltham Co-op. Dairy Coy. Went :< to England in 1898, residing there for twelve months, ? and on returning to New Zealand, settled in Kawhia, and while there undertook the re-organising of the tw -■' Farmers' Union in the Auckland Province, and being instrumental in founding the Auckland Farmers' Co- "•* op. Freezing Works and the Farmers' Co-op. Auctioneering Coy., with headquarters at Hamilton. He' *ent to England in 1908 on business, remaining there a little over a year, and on return to New Zealand as representative of Messrs. Henry A. Lane and Co., Ltd., Produce Merchants, settled first in Christchurch, subsequently coming back to Eltham, where he resided till ,six months ago, when he removed to Hawera owing to increased business interests there. In 1909 he commenced the movement which ended in the establishment of the N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. Organisation Society, Ltd., and for five years devoted himself to the task of its organisation before realising the satisfaction of seeing the Company really a going concern, and was first Chairman of Directors of the Company. In addition to this he has recently re-organised the Farmers' Union in Taranaki, for which he is Provincial Secretary and organiser, and it is now in the most flourishing position it has been in since its history in Taranaki. For some years he has been engaged in an endeavor to bring about better feeling between employer and employee and has devoted a great deal of his time to furthering a movement in that direction by the Farmers' Union, and which the Union is now undertaking. Has been President of the Chamber of Commerce at Eltham, which he was responsible for resuscitating 1 and was for some years one of the Borough Councillors of Eltham.
