TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING. AN INTERESTING CEREMONY. The annual breaking-up ceremony in connection with the New Plymouth Technical College took place at the College yesterday afternoon, when there was a fair attendance of the public. Mr. H. Trimble, a member of the Education Board, presided. There were also on the platform the Mayoress (Mrs. .Tas. Clarke), P. ,I.H. White, and S. G. Smith, M.P. (memliers of the Educalion Board), the Ven. Archdeacon Evans, the. Revs. J. Napier Milne and 0. Bhmdell.
Mr. Trimble expressed his pleasure at presiding over a breaking-up ceremony at the College after a lapse of several years. He pointed but that during the past year the work of tho school had been somewhat disorganised, partly owing to the curtailment of the train service, and partly owing to the change of the director, but no doubt any deficiency caused by this would be more than inade up next year. DIRECTOR'S REPORT. The Director (Mr. A. L. Moore) reported that the session opened In Februarv with 187 ruplls, 88 boys and ill) girls. Of these 71 took the engineering course (Including seven discharged soldiers), 83 the commercial (Including three discharged soldiers), II) tho general high school. If) domestic, four agriculture. The curtailment of the railway service badly disorganised the school work, and over SO pupils who wero not able to attend did not return to school when. the trains resumed. There have been several changes on the stuff during the year, which ho onuntorated. In spite of these factors the pupils Df tho school had done vory good work, as evidenced bv the examination results.
Engineering.—Eight passes in City and Guilds of London examinations In motor car and electrical engineering, and one third marine certificate. In connection with the engineering he mentioned the fine record of one of the old students (Mr. L. M. Alien) at the recent Canterbury Collcgo School of Engineering examinations. Mr. Allen passed his matriculation and engineering preliminary at the school in 1917.
Commercial.—Ten Pitman's speed certificates, 12 Pitman's theory certiflcati's, 14 Pitman's elementary certificates, and a first and second equal in Taranakl district competition examination by the Society of Accountants. The report of tho examiner stated that the work of the school was of a very high standard Gimera].—Four "D ' certificate, and four passes ln paper-work brick-laying, and plasticine for the Teachers "D" certificate. Other results were not yet to hand.
Mr. Moore' proceeded: It is not. my intention to onalre'this school a mere cramming place for examinations, but to give our pupils an education that will glvo tbom » good sound and solid base on which to build their afterlife. I look upon examinations as incidental events which serve to indicate that work is up to the recognised standard, and I am pleased to say in somo cases well abovo it. Wo are not losing sight of the maxim "a healthy mind In a healthy body." Tho train urrange'ments again were responsible for disorganisation of our sports. The football and hockey teams wero left short of players and matches wero impossible. The introduction of daily physical drill has proved beneficial to tho pupils. A very successful sports day was held, and<or tho first time a complete programme of girls' events was institutod. I cannot mention sports and the social sido of the school without being forcibly reminded of disadvantages under which the school is working in the lack of grounds, and the urgent need of an assembly hall. We cannot attempt an extended movement in physical drill without falling over a timber stack (tills is not our timber; it belongs to the Education Board), and as for cadet drill it is Quite nut of tho question. Tho for an assembly hall you see for yourseli. If we want to hold a school function and invito a few friends tho only way to do it is to put our furniture outside. I hope these two disabilities will be speedily removed.
After thanking the staff for their loyal support, and private Individuals foT their help, the Director concluded: I slinulo just like to conclude with a word to those pupils who are leaving the school this year. I want you to look upon this school as a sort of second home, a place where you can dmp in for a chat about work, whether triumphs or difficulties. If the former, we are pleased to hear of them; and. If the latter, they often dissolve in the telling; to fear Hod and act honorably towards nil isen. and thus build up and maintain tho reputation of your school.
Archdeacon Evans thought the report an excellent, one. There could be no doubt but that when Mr. Moore had been here longer, and the weight of his character was more felt, the college would forge ahead as it had never done before. In his early youth he had been told that if a thing was worth doing, it was worth doirfg well, and that was a principle that had lasted him through his life. By practising it, it worked into one's fibre, and became part of one's character. That was the advice he would give the scholars.
Rev. J. Napier Milne congratulated both the staff and the students on the very excellent work done during the past year. When they did well, it was satisfactory both for themselves and for those who taught them. The boys and girls who would enjoy their summer holidays most were those who had done best and worked hardest in connection with the examination. He stressed the point that they must not look for easy billets, but must be prepared to work hard, then they I could look forward to success in life..
The Rev. 0. Bhmdell said that in all their life's work, he wanted them to note two things, viz., "Be thorough in all they do, and be humble in all they do." He gave some illustrations of famous men, and stressed the point that they must never get the idea that they knew everything. PRIZE LIST.
