Th# Woodvllle Jockey Club's summer meeting concludes to-day. Wapplng was railed through to Woodvllle, but Turplnlte remained home. His chance of beating Tessaress at weight-for-age did not appeal to his owner, Mr. Jkjn Hathaway. Recent charts Quote the Karo—Rosslnl double for Auckland at a ridiculously low figure, and short prices are offered about Snub, AflictaUon, and Battle, Song when mentioned In the same breath with Rossini, Hymestra, and Slmonldes. It Is stated In Hulls that the Charles Jenkins who met hla death under tragic circumstances I at Porlrua, Is not the "Charlie" who was In I the front tank of horsemen in the Dominion ! for so many years. This 13 probably correct, as "Jenks," the Jockey, lived at Bulls, \ and those sporting scribes who rushed In and framed up doming obituary notwes are a trifle premature. I Talking of "Je'nlts" Teminds me. One day at neyer-mlnd-where, the crack horseman was riding a prad named Mahuta, a bad horse at the barrier The others were nicely lined up, and "Jenks" brought Mahuta up at tlie gallop, expecting a "By," which didn't eventuate. "Jenks" came into violent collision with the tapes, and his nasal organ shed more blood than was exhibited in the Clabby-Heeney scrap. "Jenks" was Indignant, and riding up to the starter, he exclaimed, "What's your game? { Why didn't you let 'em go? Just look at the mess you've made of my proboscis I" Jenkins got a lot of latitude In those days, and the starter kindly overlooked the unseemkly remarks, and gave Jenklnß the "fly" he was looking for. Mahuta "walked to."
