REPATRIATION.
NEW PLYMOUTH COMMITTEE. The New Plymouth Repatriation Committee met on Monday evening. Present: Messrs. J. W. Chaney (in the chair), T. Furlong, C. Carter, F. W. Okev, E. Whittle, T. C. List, J. R. Rowlands, H. R. Cattley, F. L. Hartnell, and the secretary (Mr. A. S. Allen). The secretary reported that there were three names on the unemployed register, all requiring clerical or salesmen's work.
Appreciation was expressed of tbe work done on behalf of the committee by Mr. W. E. Percival, of Inglewood, and it was decided to recommend to the Repatriation Department that he be appointed the Board's representative for the Inglewood district. An application by two brothers for the loan of £OOO with which to purchase a business was approved. Six loans of £SO each, free of interest, for tlis purchase of furniture, were approved, and a grant was made to one of tlicm for the purchase of tools of trade. An application for the defraying of the cost of a university course, interfered with by applicant's enlistment, was recommended to the Department fof favorable consideration. Sustenance allowances were made, in respect of a man learning engineering, another carpentry,- and two taking up farm training work. An allowance was made to a young man who was desirous of completing his apprenticeship, and the subscription met of another who contemplated extending his knowledge by means of a correspondence school course. The chairman, referring to the recent visit of the committee to the Technical College, expressed satisfaction of the facilities offered for the training of returned men, and was quite satisfied that the director and his staff were doing all in their power to help the disabled men learn their new trades. The secretary reported that advice had been received-that the department offices would close for the Christmas and New Year holidays from December 24 to January 3 (both days inclusive).
