December 0. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held to-day. Present —Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), McK. | Morrison* Waiter, Hancock, McKay, Cam- ; eron, and O'Neill. I Th? Department wrote, stating j that section !'■'< ui the Social Hy- j giene Act, I(H7, made it quite clear I that Hospital Boards must make pruvi- ■ sion for tiie treatment of venereal patients, either as in-patients or at external clinics.—Deceived. * \ The North Canterbury Hospital Board , forwarded for support a resolution that the Government be requested to make veneral diseases notifiable.—lt was decided to endorse the resolution The chairman said that after conferring with other members of the "Board, he "had accepted a tender Cor £M2 10s I from Julian and Sons for replacing the ! wood floor around the hospital with. The medical superintendent reported j that during November, SI patients were j admitted. 29 discharged, and there were i'two deaths. Twenty remained in tlw I hospital at lite end of the month Eleven 1 oneralions had been performed under | anaesthesia. There were four diphtheria I rases in isolation. —Adopted. ! Dr. Steven reported furth»: that the ! Public Health Department had sent up j a "bacteriological assistant to inquire into the causes of the prevalence of diphtheria 'at iiidhirst school. Swabs were taken of i the" throats of all the teacher? and scholr.rs (127 in all), and 5 were diphtheria- ! carriers. Steps had been taken to isolate ' I r.nd treat these carriers, who had since '-. heen pronounced free from infection > Hei •. ived.
On the motion of Mr. Walter, second- j cd by Mr. Cameron, it was decided to in- | crease the salary of the medical superin- | tendent by £SO. It was stated that Dr. Steven had worked well with the, patients, the staff, | and the Board. The chairman referred to the doctors success as a surgeon, and the confidence j the people now had in him. He had i never heard, on his visits to the hospital, a single complaint against the docj tor. j Mr. Cameron moved that the salary of Mr. Penn, the secretary, be increased jby JCr.O per annum. He slated that Mr. | Penn had been a 'very valuable officer. ) The chairman said his own duties were ivory light bsenusa of the secretary's ofucijencV = The Public Auditor had spoken I very highly of the way he kept his | books.
Other members spoke in a similar strain, and ihc motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Penn. in returning thanks, said he bad spoken to the Auditor about having an office at the hospital, and a secretary who would give the whole of his time to hospital matters, lie was rather averse to it, and said that the proper place for the Hoard's olliee was in the town.
The matron reported that Kurse Dawkin had secured a first pass for cooker.' at the Technical School. The Board was recommended to raise the cook's salary to £■>, also to consider an increase in the housemaids' wages.—Adopted, and the recommendations were agreed to. The Healift Ofliccr reported two cases of diphtheria and three cases of influenza in the Stratford Borough for the month. Three cases of diphtheria and seven cases of influenza had been notified for the County. The influenza c.;scs were of a I very mild nature—Adopted. ! The Health Inspector reported on saniI tary defects at the Midhirst School.— I The chairman said a copy of the report 1 \yould be sent to the Education Board.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Borough Council met. as a general ruvposp3 committee last evening. Present: Mr. J. W. McMillan (Mayor), Crs. S. B. Hunter, C. B. Walsh, W. J. Newton, T. Lawsbn, C. Jackson, A. Stewart, \V. H. If. Young, R. H. Cameron and J 11. Thompson. Messrs4Wic-kjiam and Bond waited on the Council and asked that butchers be £riven the right to remove offal from the abattoirs.—The Mayor stated that nothing unfit for human consumption could, under the by-laws, be removed, and the matter was referred to the Abattoir* Committee.
Correspondence was read in reference to the re-opening of the mountain quarry, ; and Cr. Jackson stated that there were large deposits of lime rock near Te iWera, which could be delivered at Stratford mini] cheaper than mountain metal. —The matter was held over till further information is received from the Governi ment. j A letter from the motor garage pro- ! prietors of New Zealand, containing suggestions for the regulation of motor traffic, was read, and on the motion of I the Mayor, it was decided to refer it to ' the Tarauaki By-laws Conference. j 'the works committee were asked to j bring down a report on the question of ! increasing the price for metui obtained I uv contract from the Patca river
Messrs PuffiH and Gibsou, architects, j forwarded plans of public conveniences j for men, estimated to cist JCT-IO. —On \ the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved that the amount lie provided for in the loan estimates. The electrical engineer reported that IS.tKU units had been generated during the month. The manager for the abattoir reported that for flic month the following stock had been slaughtered:—Cows 101, heifers 12, oxen 11, calves i\, shec]) 262, lambs 84. pigs 11. The fees totalled £C2 0s (Id, an increase of £2 over the corresponding month last year.—Received. I The Libarian (.Miss M. Laverty) reported that 132(1 books had been issued and 1354 returned. The odd books issued totalled ISC and those returned 137. Subscriptions received amounted to £9 6s The Inspector (Mr. Rowson) reported that the Town Hall had been let three times during the month. Fifty-six head of cattle had been taken off tin street and there had been four convictions for breeches of the by-laws.—Re-
ceived. The Town Clerk reported on the contractors' difficulty in obtaining labour for the removal of rubbish and recommended that the Council do the work, making a minimum chaTge of 6d per week.—Consideration deferred till next meeting of the Council. The Under of M. Aagaard for dog
collars was accepted, conditionally on the samples submitted being satisfactory. The Mayor reported that he had received a communication from the Premier that Mr. McVilley would endeavour to visit Stratford this week in connection with the Post Office site. GENERAL.
Miss E. Turner, formerly of the nurs-1 ing staff of the Christchurch Hospital, has been appointed to the staff of the Stratford Hospital. Miss E. Walte's name was placed on the waiting list for the position of probationer. A letter was received by the Stratford Hospital at its meeting to-day from the wardsman, who asked for an increase in wages. He commenced his letter by saying that this was the day of all-round increases in wages and some holidays He was on duty, he said, night and day, ;:nd did more knee drill than any Salvationist he knew. He had to earn his living by the sweat of his face, and thought there should be a big increase in his wages The matter was left in the hands of the chairman to deal with.
