NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The General Purposes Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Cornell met List night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Jas. Clarke), Crs. J. W. Hayden, F. J. Hill, W. F. Short, W. A. Collis, R. L Parkin and A. E. Sykea. An apology for absence was received from (Jr. Griffiths. PUBLIC WELFARE COMMITTEE. The Public Welfare and Safety Committee recommended that the Motor Garage Proprietors' Association be informed that most of the regulations relating to motor traffic suggested by them were already embodied in the Council's ; by-laws, and that such as were not would be considered when new by-laws were being made; that dog registration j fees be fixed at 10s (reducible to 7s Cd ! if paid by March 31st), for all dogs, I excepting sheep and cattle dogs, for I which a charge of 2s 6d should be made, and that Inspector King be appointed registrar under the Act; that t extra roitaa b» provided at the Salter <at an estimated cost of i), and that seats in tho dressing ns ba replaced. he report wa3 adopted. WORKS MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Works . Management Committee recommended as follows: (a) That subject to the right being reserved for access to the sewer in the line if necessary the borough engineer be authorised to grant permission to Messrs. Webster Bros, to temporarily close that portion of James Lane to which their land has frontages during the rebuilding of their auction mart the owners of other lands affected having consented in writing to this permission being granted. (b) That Mr. C. Carter be informed that in view of the fact that the Council is unable to obtain sufficient drays and labor for urgent tarring work it is impossible to accede at present to his request for the removal of the bank in front of section 1142 Victoria Road, but that the Council will permit him to remove the earth at his own expense and put it upon his own property, (c) That the application of Messrs. J. H. Sellars and C. H. Burton for the removal of the sand bank in Sackville Street be referred to the chairman to interview the applicants and the Fitzroy School Committee with a view to that 1 Committee -taking the contribution oiler- ' fid and removing the sand to the school ground. (f) That the offer of the electric light department to house, repair, charge with electricity, clean battery, etc., the electric lorry for the sum of £l3O per annum be accepted subject to the condition that if no repairs are required the amount allowed therefor be not charged. The report was adopted. ELECTRIC LIGHT AND TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE. The Electric Light and Tramways Committee recommended as follows: (a) That this Committee be authorised to expend up to £SOO in replenishing stores and stocks of the electric light department. (b) That the applicants for lighting at Vealc's Estate be informed that their application will be considered upon the completion of the hydro-electric extensions now in hand (approximate cost of extension £3OOO, approximate revenue £32 per annum). (c) . That consideration of Messrs. Blair Mason and Lee's request for the gauging of the flow of the Waiwakaiho River at the Devon Road weir be deferred. .

(d) That the recommendation of Messrs. Blair Ma«on and- Lee that Messrs. A. and T. Burt's quotation for four sluicegates required in connection with the new intake at £9B 15s each f.d.b., Dunedin, be accepted, be given effect to. (e) That subject, to the provisions of paragraphs 35 and 36 of the general conditions of contract, whereby the contractors still remain liable to the Council, permission be granted to Messrs. Pyane and Blanchard to sublet the driving of the tunnel to such persons as the consulting engineers may approve in writing. (g) That the Railway Department having sold the land upon which it was proposed to erect a shelter shed at Strandon and the committee being to accept the terms offered by - il i owners, the Fitzroy Ratepayers' Assouiation be informed that the uouncil cannot see its way to erect the shelter shed at present. The question of shelter sheds along the tram route was referred to by the Mayor, who said he thought the next necessity along the route was proper shelter sheds at the section ends. Ho thought one was badly wanted at Eliot Street. The report was adopted. GENERAL. The inspector was instructed to confer with the engineer in regard to the clearing of noxious weeds from the roads and streets. The Fitzroy Fire Brigade were granted permission to erect a practice stand in Darnell Street for the purpose of the competition' team practising. The application of Mr. H. C. Osborne for permission to subdivide a sectional- : lowing a 12ft Tight of way for access to both sections was declined. Messrs Standish and Anderson were given permission to use a right-of-way granted prior to 1888, at Bonithon.
