STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) December 8.

Good progress is being made with the preparations for the school bazaar on December 11th. During the afternoon there is to be a sports programme, and in the evening two concerts will be held, all the items being given by the children. Parents and others are responding freely to an appeal for help,- and the stalls should, be well provided with goods. .There was a large gathering at the Kohuratahi Hall oil Friday evening, when a social was held as a welcome home to returned soldiers. The evening was devoted to dancing, interspersed with songs and other items, including a song by Mrs Stockwell, violin solos by Mr. Robaon, and a recitation by Mr. Jepson. An address of welcome was given by Mr. Geever, who mentioned that, though the district was thinly populated, 132 men had offered for active service, and many had made the great sacrifice. The hall and supperroom had been tastefully decorated, and a supper worthy of the occasion was provided. Among the ladies who largely contributed to the success of the social were Mesdames Hight, Barlow, Hedgeman, Popt! and N&Trn, and Misses McCutcheon (2), Mantle, Tobin and Hodder. Mr. T. Trask was honorary secretary and received assistance from Mr. R. Wilson. The cost of the entertainment was met by subscription, and a considerable surplus remains in hands. It hAs been suggested that this surplus form part of a fund' for purchasing an honors' board.
