HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Councillors C. J, tHawken (chairman), B. Douglas, R. ,T. Linn, E. Washer, B. C. Lysaght, A. Larcom, and W. Williams. Messrs. R. ,T. Ballantine and J. A. Kennedy (Normanby) wrote asking that about 23 chains of Ohangi Road be formed and metalled. Cr. Linn suggested that a.little scarifying bo done. There was one bad dip in tho road. The chairman said the trouble was that there were so many roads which were worse. Cr. Linn said the water laid in a hollow all the winter. Tho overseer said the job would not be a big one if a team was available. They only had a spring dray that could bo used. On the motion of Cr. Linn, seconded bv Cr. Washer, the matter was left in tho hands of the overseer. A batch of correspondence was received in connection with the Mt. Egmont metal quarry. Sir William, Iraser wrote elating that he was having a report prcparod on tho cost of completing the work. Tho chairman said that Mr. Massey when Interviewed seemed very favorable to tho project, and there was every probability that the line would be extended to the quarry where, according to experts, the best of metal was available for asphalt roads. The Wanganu! Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that at a conference a resolution had been passed favoring the formation of a league representative of on area within a circle touching Hawara, I'almorston North, and Taumaruhu! —Tho chairman said his view was that they were not interested in Wanganul. The letter was received. Tho secretary for the Hawera District Law Society wrote stating that the Council's resolution in respect to a resident magistrate for Hawera had been.forwarded to the Minister for Justice—Received. Mr. W. G. Pearce (Coylton), wrote thanking the Council for their successful efforts in obtaining a grant of £350 for the Putupurlmu Road. He hoped to call on the Council re the expenditure in about February next. —Received. A number of ratepayers petitioned the Council to form and metal Iredale Road for a distance of about twenty chains, a loan of (say) £SOO to be raised, and the ratepayers In the area benefited to be rated according to the value of their properties.—The overseer said the road had never boen dedicated. The clerk said that did not matter. A loan could still bo raised. In repl; '.o the chairman, the overseer said tho cost would be less than E'jOO, but if the Council was going to do the road they should do the footpaths also. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to. take steps to raise the loan. The Public Works Department wrote stating that matters In regard to the Puketl Road deviation wsre not yet in order, and setting out what was required—Received.
FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman reported as follows: Main Sou*h Road, Mokola.—The roller and the scarifier are now working on this road getting it in readiness for tarring. It is being rolled where the road Is in good shape and scarified where there are pot holes. The Tangahoe Hill will have to be left until Ihe last as it will require to be tarred as soon as it is scarified. Normanby-Oltalawa Road.—This road is now being scarified from Okaiawa to the Walngongoro bridge, and good progress Is being made The tar pots have been dismantled and it was found that -he angle Iron at tho bottom was badly cracked, causing them to leak. This has now been remedied, nnd they aro ready to go into place as soon as a bricklayer can be procured, which has been promised early next week. i Makino Bridge—With regard to this bridge, it is now being built without the assistance of the Public Works Department as their requirements were too costly.' With the consent of the chairman It is being constructed with timber that we had on hand from the old Tangohoe bridge, and is all sound and In good condition The bridge will be open for traffic next week. Shingle'fir top dressing Is now being delivered on the following Roads: Main South, Mokola, and H&wera, Skeet, Ahipalpa, Normanby, Okaiawa, Boylan, i.ustln, Ketemarfte, and Waihl. The agent for the ironbark timber Informed me the other day that the rest of the timber will be here for the Tangohoe bridge within a fortnight.—Adopted.
A DEPUTATION. Messrs. C. J. Preston, and W. Madgwlck waited on the Council as a deputation from the Normanby Town Board, asking for the assistance of the Council in regard to re-tarring Of that portion of the main road. running through the Town Board's district, Mr. Preston said the Town Board did not have the plant to do tho work, and further, It did not have the necessary labor In reply to the chairman, Mr. Preston said that a portion of the road had already been done by the County Council. They would remember that there was a promise from Mr. J, B. Murdoch, the former chairman, that the Council would do the work. Cr. Linn considered that the work should be carried out If possible. The chairman remarked that the Council, did not mind doing the work, but It was hard pressed to keep Its own work ahead. The deputation, however, could be assured that the Council would do its best for the Town Board. After tho deputation withdrew, Cr. Linn moved that the Council do the work as soon as possible. Cr, Washer seconded the motion, and It was carried.
