STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will tecalrt prompt attention.) LICENSING COMMITTEE. Dee. 5. The quarterly meeting of the Stratford Licensing Committee was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M. (chairman), Richards, Morrison, Sole, McCutchan, and Hathaway. Catherine Euwright applied for a renewal of the license for the Egmont Hotel, Midhirst. Mr Coleman appeared for the applicant. Sergeant Dale said the repairs had been done sufficiently well to carry on as far as the old building was concerned. The licensee had been before the court on October 31st last, and there were previous convictions under the War Regulations.

Mr. Coleman said that the applicant had, previous to recent convictions, carried on a hotel for 40 years without having had even an information laid against her. The chairman said the application would be granted, but Mr. Coleman must inform his client that there were complaints about the conduct of her house, chiefly in regard to Sunday trading and selling after hours. The question of whether a license would be granted for the present building in 1920 was raised by Mr. Stanford, who appeared for the owiier. He stated that the police report represented the committee as having decided not to grant a license in respect to the present premises, but all zhey had done was to ask that the licensee should take into consideration the question of building before the I'J2O annual meeting. . The chairman said that many things may happen before then, and the committee could not say at this stage that a license would not be granted for the present house. The licensee, however, s'muld know the feeling of the Committee. The application of James O'Malley for a renewal of the license for the Tariki Hotel was granted, the police having reported that all recommendations had been earned out.

The transfer .of the license for the Club Hotel. Stratford, from H. J. Kirkwood to J. H. Quinn was granted. MODERATE LEAGUE ADDRESS. The audience Which assembled at the Toivt. Hall on Thursday evening to hear Mr. R. A. Armstrong ou State control of the liquor traffic, was fairly Bmall. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. McMillan, presided, and the speaker was given a most attentive hearing. Mr. Armstrong dealt with State control as applied to Gretna and Carlisle, England, where it had resulted in great improvements. The speaker dealt in detail with'the estimated cost of State purchase and control in New Zealand. The estimated cost of taking over the trade, after allowing a good margin above the actual vi.lue of the buildings, would be about nine millions. It was an exaggeration to .say that the cost would be from 10 to 15 millions. He dealt with other matters, including the decrease in drunkenness in New Zealand, and the reduced quantity of liquor consumed per head, ! and asked his hearers to give State control a trial. In reply to a question he stated that the Rev. Millan had denied the statement attributed to him in the Vanguard. to the effect that the brewers were supporting the Moderate League. The statemem made by Mr. Millan had been twisted. A vote of thanks to Mr. Armstrong was passed by acclamation. A SERIOUS ACCT^ENT. While a car, driven by Mr. D. Bird, was being towed ffoni Hunter's Road this morning, the towing rope became entangled with t..e steering gear, with the result' that the car crashed into a bridge. Mr. Bird's right arm, above the elbow. was badly tfrok en, and the limb almost severed from the body at the shoulder. The injured man was removed to the Stratford Hospital. His condition is critical, and it is feared that amputation will be necessary.
