LIQUOR LAWS.

CHANGES IN AUSTRALIA. A FAR-REACHING MEASURE. By Teleuraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received Dec o, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Dec. fi. During the discussion in the Legislative Assembly on the Liquor Amendment Bill, Mr. Beeby moved an amendment to settle' the whole issue at the next general elections. Mr. ?torey supported this, considering it necessary to get an effective vote, otherwise they probably would get a forty per cent. vote. Mr. Hall interjected: "They get seventy per cent, in New Zealand." Mr. Storey replied: "New Zealand is a little island in the Pacific about the size of a pocket handkerchief. No one of any importance comes from there." (Laughter). Mr. Beeby's amendment was defeated. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assu.

[The New South Wales Government's Liquor Amendment Bill proposes to extend 6 o'clock closing, suspend local option, reduce the number of licenses under a scheme similar to that operating in Victoria (including compensation for dispossessed licensees provided by the publicans themselves), and a referendum on the question of Prohibition. The New South Wales Alliance resolved to absolutely refuse to accept the otLiipeiisation clauses in the Act, declaring that they are illogical and financially impossible, and make Prohibition absolutely impossible.]
