FITZROY SCHOOL CARNIVAL.
AN ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. The Fitzroy Sehool Committee, like many other similar bodies, find their funds a long way short of requirements. On learning of the urgent need for money to carry out necessary improvements, the ladies of the district volunv teered their services, and, with the assistance of the teacherß, the committet and the school children, a carnival was held yesterday in the school and grounds which attracted a large attendance, while the entertainment provided was a great credit to all concerned. Mr. Grover, chairman of the committee, formally opened the proceedings by explaining the object of the gathering, welcoming the visitors, and thanking all who had helped in the arrangement?, including who sent contributions of plain and fancy garments, produce, ctc;> other speakers being Messrs S. G. Smith, M.P., and P. J. H. White (members of the Board), who sympathised witfi the committee in their financial troubles, and 'congratulated the sehool on having secured additional land for a playground. Among the visitors present were Messrs Grayling and Trimble (members of the Education Beard). The exhibitions of drill given by the infants, under the direction of Miss Rawlinson, evoked much applause, the little, folk acquitting themselves excellently, the marching and imitations of animals being performed with much spirit. The same may be said of the work of the junior boys, under Miss Allen; the dumb-bell work of the primers, under Miss Andrews; the. physical drill and tableau of the junior boys, under Miss Allen, the wand drill of St.2 and 3 girJs, under Miss Gibson; the clubswinging (always a taking item) of the upper girls, and the fancy marching of the junior boys and girls, under Miss Andrews^ The winners of the various competitions were:—Doll nrlde.—Miss E. Jordan: ham—Mrs. Kelly; Doll—Mrs, Davis; camisole—Mrs Kelly; nightdress top—Mrs Grover;, cake—Mrs Brosnau and Mrs K. Burr (equal)—half each. The following are the results of the sports:—High jump.—G. Colson (4/1%) 1, G. Grover 2. Bicvele (slow).—Rich Bates 1, C. Bevell 2. Sack (final).Les. Pycroft 1, I. Hawkins at:d D. McDougall 2. Three-legged.—R. Yardley and Pycroft 1. Crocodile race.—Yardley's team. The various stalls, which were all well filled, were liberally patronised, and helped materially to swell the funds. They were in charge of the following:— Plain and fancy garments—Mesdames Rennell, Menhennet, Andrews. Produce —Mesdames Kibby and Braeegirdle. Sweets—Misses R. West and Andrews. Flowers—Misses E. Johnson and Oxenham, Tee-cream, and soft drinks—Mesdames Jenkins and McDougall. Afternoon tea—Mesdames Grover, Aroa, Bishop, Hall, Miss I. Colson, and other young lady helpers. Fishing pondMasters 0. Grovor and J. Bird. Bran tub—Master Archie Huggard. Shooting tube—Master Claude Revell. Cookery—Judges Mrs Richards and Miss Cannell. The headmaster, Mr. o'. Johnson, gave an active supervision over the whole of the entertainment, and at the close he warmly thanked all those who had contributed to its success, especially mentioning tho stall-holders, Mrs Roch, the East End Committee, Mr. ivewton King, and the parents and others who had donated produce, etc. It is expected that as the result of this effort a sum approximating £75 will have been raised. The two works that are chiefly in view are the erection of a frontage wall, and the raising of the playground, so that there is ample room for any further donations that may be forwarded to the headmaster.
