BOROUGH BY-ELECTION.

RETURN OF MR. A. E. SYKES. A TWO TO ONE MAJORITY. A by-election was held yesterday to All the vacant seat on the New Plymouth, Borough Council, caused by the resigna* tion of Mr. Jas. Clarke, who contested and was elected to the Mayoralty. Up till the 'middle of the afternoon a surprisingly small number of olectora liijjj* voted, but from 4 o'clock onwards they came in larger numbers, and the total number of votes cast was a few more than at the by-election for a Mayor a few weeks ago. Yesterday's total was 1(515, Mr. Sykes securing 1088, and Mr. Pitzpatrick 535. There were 12 informal votes. The arrangements made by the Returning Officer (Mr. R. Day) worked smoothly, and the returns were received at an early hour. The final result was made known about ten minutes toj eight. Mr Sykes did not appear. Mr. W. Nash returned thanks to those! who had supported the Labor candidate, who was away attending a conference of waterside workers at Napier. The following is the result of the vot< tag:- J Fitzpatrick.
