Polling hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. REGINALD DAY, Returning Officer for the Borough of New Plymouth. Dated this 2Gtli day of November, 1919 TO THE ELECTORS OF NEW PLYMOUTH. November 2G. Ladies ?.nd Gentlemen, On Wednesday next, Dccemucr 3, you will be asked to elect a citizen tj fill tho vacancy ou the Borough Council. In response to the request of many ratepayers, and on the nomination of the New Plymouth Branch of tho Ne - v Zealand Labor Party, I.am standing for the sen*. If- elected 1 dim!! nppons the introduction of the one-man tram system. Could it be proved that the trams could be run efficiently, with no.danger to the public, no delays in the service, and no abnormal strain on the one man in charge of the car, then I see no reason for opposing its introduction, but after hearing the evidence at the Magisterial Enquiry I am satisfied that the system would not be efficient—would bo a serious source of danger to the public, a constant cause of annoyance to those using tho ears, and an abnormal strain on the man in charge of the car. The potentialities of the Borough Electrical Department are enormous and I would help forward the work to the best of my ability, but I strongly oppose the making of large profit i which are in turn transferred to t:ie ordinary account of the Council for the benefit of a few of the eople. The profit of £6897 16s (id transferred last year should have been held in the electrical accounts and the lightingcharges, out of which the profits were made, should have beeh reduced. I shall advocate and help £prward any scheme for the benefi of the people that will relieve the present shortage of houses. The urgent necessity oi ensuring a full supply of milk throughout the year should be attended to at once by the Council a: d I will give the matter attention if elected. In conclusion I wish to point out that all thinkers now agree that out of the present darkness and confusion will come a world of more stable order IF understanding prevails. No, understanding is possible whilst the workers are unrepresented on the Councils w.-ich govern local conditions. The Council will be strengthened by a first-hand knowledge of the working man's point of view. And whilst the present uncertain conditions prevail in industrial, political, and social life, then one who lives continually in close touch with manual workers will be of good service on the Borough Council. For these reasons I solicit your support on next. Yours faithfully, W. H. FITZPATRICK. FOR IMMEDIATE SALE. 20 GOOD GRADE JERSEY COWS in milk. J. R. HILL & SON, St. Aubyn Street. Phone 711.
