TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

WORK OF RETURNED SOLDIERS. REPATRIATION COMMITTEE'S VISIT. Yesterday afternoon, the Repatriation Committee, consisting of Messrs. C. 11. Weston (chairman), T. Furlong, W. j! Chaney, F. Harwell, F. W. Okey, H. K. Cattley. J. R. Rowlands, and A. S. Allen (secretary), paid a. visit to the Technical College to inspect the building, equipment., and the classes at work, more, particularly the returned soldiers at present undergoing a course of instruction there.

They were met, by the director (Mr. • L. Moore), who first conducted the party to the engineering lecture room, winch is completely, fitted up witn apparatus to illustrate applied mechanics oi machines, motor-car mechanism, etc. and the drawing office, where the drawings made by the returned soldiers were inspected. The machine shop, which TW '"i/li" was I,oxt visited. Heie all the machines, lathes, etc, pulleys and shafting was fitted and erected oy the engineering pupils, and so well was the work carried out that a slia-ht pull on the belt was sufficient to 'set the whole in motion. Here they have two forms of motive power, an 'oil engine and electric motor; for demonstra- ! tion purposes either can be used. One group of returned soldiers was busy refitting and adjusting the engine* and gearing of a demonstration motor-car. home specimens of their bench and lathe work were also exhibited, showing the very creditable progress made bv these' returned men. In the adjoining blacksmith s shop, three of the forges, the vices, and a small gas engine were all made and erected by the pupils of the engineering classes. The gas engine was utilised for blowing the forges. The committee were very pleased with all they saw in the department, and expressed the opinion that the facilities offered by such a splendidly equipped school should be more widely known to the public, and the people of New Plymouth should be proud to possess such an institution. A visit was also paid to the main building, and the various class-rooms inspected, and the special room where the returned soldiers were pursuing commercial studies. On visiting the cookery and domestic science room, the members of the committee were invited to afternoon tea, prepared by the pupils under the direction of Miss Howard. Mr. Weston thanked the director for the good work that was being done for the returned soldiers, and incidentally for the country by helping them to take their place in the community as pro'Werg,
