BOROUGH FINANCES.
A MISUNDERSTANDING REMOVED, The recent report on Borough- works. and the financial outlook was briefly referred to at the meeting of the General Purposes Committee t of the Borough Council last night. The general manager (Mr. T. T. Bellringer) drew attention to a letter fromMr. C. H. Burgess, which appeared in the Daily News yesterday, from which it appeared that Mr. Burgess considered the report drawn up was a reflection on his administration of the Borough. "There was no intention to cast reflection in any way on the management of' the Borough by Mr. Burgess," said Mr. Bellringer. "I do not think the report suggested that, and there was certainly' never any such suggestion in my mind,> [ merely pointed out what I considered to be the position of the Borough, and it was my duty to do this. Mr. Burgeas was also quite right in stating his side of the question." Mr. Bellringer said that it had simply been decided to stop certain street works in order to concentrate on other works. . The Mayor (Mr. Jaa. Clarke) thought there had been some misunderstanding in regard to the position of the Council. All that the Council had really done was to transfer £2OOO authorised for certain street works to the tramway track, and bo abandon the work which it was originally intended to do. It was considered that the tramway route was the most urgent, and so it was decided to drop tho other work. The position was Bimply that the Council changed the particular work to be done, and there was no suggestion that the finances of the Council would be any better next March because of the change than they would have been if Mr. Burgess continued in office.
