Mr. A. R. Ryder has been appointed a member.of the Carnegie Library Committee in place of Mr. A. H. Johnstone. A cable from Adelaide, reports the death of Mrs. Low, widow of the late Adam Lindsay Gordon, who re-married two years after the poet's death. Sub-Inspector D. D. Hutton, who has been on sick leave for several weeks, resumed duty yesterday. Senior-Sergt. J. C. Willis, who has been relieving him, returns to Wellington at once. Mr. Chas. Symes, who formerly resided in the Patea district, died in Auckland on Friday morning. The deceased was formerly chairman of the Patea County Council, and a member of the Patea Harbor Board. At the meeting of the General Purposes Committee of the Borough Council last night a resolution was passed placing on record the Council's appreciation of the able and courteous manner in which Mr. J. H. Fowler has discharged his duties' as Government Audit inspector in this district for the last seven and a half years. The resolution ei>pre3sed regret at Mr. Fowler's departure, and congratulated him on his promotion. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Egmont A. and if. Association on Saturday afternoon, Mr. C. R. Stannard was appointed secretary to the association, vice Mr. A. D. Perkins resigned. The new secretary has been connected with the Association for some time past, having a seat on the General and Executive Committees, and has always been active in forwarding the interests, and progress of the Association. There were eighteen applications for the position. On Friday last the citizens of Manaia farewelled Mr. and Mrs. W. Taylor and family at the Oddfellows' Hall. uw ing the past 11J year, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor have taken an active part in public and patriotic affairs, their good work, particularly during the epidemic, being warmly eulogised by the chairman of the Town Board (Mr. J. J. Meldon) and others, and they were presented with a solid silver tea service, while each of their three children received a handsome present. In returning thanks, Mr. Taylor expressed regret at leaving, but said the step was necessitated by health reasons. Dr. Edgar H. Wilkins, medical inspector of schools for Southland, has been appointed superintendent of. medical inspection and physical education under the Education Department (says a telegram from Wellington). The medical inspection of school children up to the present has been carried on by district medical inspectors without a superintendent and physical education has been without a director since the death of Mr. Royd Garlick. Both departments are now combined under one head, who will be stationed at Wellington, and who will control the work throughout the Dominion. At the conclusion of the meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, the members, and the office staff, together with the Government auditor (Mr. J. H. Fowler), were entertained to afternoon tea by the chairman, and during the proceedings a presentation was made to Miss M. Okey, who has Been in the employ of the Council for several years and has left in view of her approaching marriage- Mr. Connett expressed the appreciaiton of the Council of the very faithful service rendered by Miss Okey and wished her every good wish for her future welfare and happiness. Mr. Ellis, County clerk, also supplemented the chairman's remarks. Mr. A. T. Moore replied suitably on behalf of Miss Okey. Occasion was also taken to introduce Miss Drake, who succeeds Miss Okey in the Council office,.
