MUNICIPAL ELECTION. BOROUGH OF NEW PLYMOUTH. IN THE MATTER OP. THE "MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS ACT, 1908," "tHE LOCAL ELECTIONS AND POLLS ACT, 1908," AND THE ACTS AMENDING THE SAME'RESPECTIVELY j[ HEREBY give public notice that the iollowing persons have been duly nominated as Candidates for the Office of "the'.Borougli of J^ew., Plymouth. FITZPATIUCK, William Henry SYKES, Alfred Ernest. and, there being only one vacancy to be filled, I hereby also give notice that a Poll will be taken as between the said candidates on WEDNESDAY, the THIRD day of December, 1019. Polling hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. REGINALD DAY, Returning Officer for the Borough of' , New Plymouth. Dated this 28th day of November, 1910 BOROUGH BY-ELECTION. jJN response to the wishes of different J sections of burgesses, I offer iiiy services in connection with the election to fill the vacancy on the Borough Council, j I need hardly remind burgesses of my j previous experience on the Council, as [ well as on the Hospital Board, nor to sav j that if they do me the honor of electing me, that I will again give of niy best on behalf of the town. My interests are wrapped up with those of New Plymouth, which I believe to be on the eve of great development-!, and to be well worthy of ?1I the help and guidance that can be given it. I am of opinion that, in municipal, as I in business inTairs, we cannot afford to stand still. Particularly is that so of N T ew Plymouth, with its great hydroelectric and other resources. We must -pursue a policy of progress and enterprise, consistent always, howev.er, with ! soundness, and so hostih the time when | Ihe town v.'ill take the place it is destij- j ed some day to become of being the fifth city ill New Zealand. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what I will work and for if you honor me with your support. Yours Faithfully, A. K. SYKES. •TO THE ELECTORS OP NEW PLYMOUTH. November 20. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ou Wednesday next, December 3, yon will be asked to elect a citizen t„ fill the vacancy on the Borough Council. In response to the request of. many ratepayers, and on the nomination of the New Plymouth Branch of the New Zealand Labor Party, 1 am standing for the seat. .If elected'l shall oppose the introduction of the one-man train system. Could it be proved that the trams could be run efficiently, with no danger to the public, no delays in the service, and no abnormal stra.n on the one man in charge of the ear, then I see no reason for opposing its introduction, but after hearing the evidence at the Magisterial Enquiry [ am satisfied that the system would not be efficient—would be a serious source of danger to the public, a constant came of aiiiicy.snce to those using the cars, and an abnormal strain on the man in charge of the car. The potentialities of the Borough Electrical Department are enormous and I would help forward the work to the best | of my ability, but 1 strongly oppose the ! making of large profits which are in turn transferred to the ordinary account of the Council for the benefit of a few of the eop'c- The profit, of ,CiiS97 Ifis 6d transferred last year should have been held in the electrical accounts and the lighting charges, out oi which the profits were made, sho-.-.ld have been reduced.

I shall advocate and l elp forward any schema for the benefi of the people that will relievo the present shortage of houses The i.rgent neces.-ity ol ensuring a full supply of milk through out year should be attended to at once by the Council a: d I will give tile matter attention if elected. In conclusion I wish to point out that all thinkers now agree that out of the present darkness and confusjon will come a world of more stable order IP understanding prova.ls. Xo understanding is possible whilst the workers are unrepresented on the Councils w. i.»h govern i'ral conditions. The Council will be strengthened by a first-hind knowledga of the working mail's point of view. And whilst the present uncertain conditions prevail in industrial, political, and social life, then one who lives continually £f| close touch with manual workers will W of good service on the Borough Council Ivor these reasons I > jlicit your support, 011 iVcdiiesday nex'. Yours faithfully, W. H. I'TTZPATRICK. NOXIOUS Wl£]£D DEAIOXSTRATION. jgETTLERS of Opunake, wait for Miller's demonstration 011 noxious weeds during this week.
