STRATFORD.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) Nov. 28. i At a special meeting of the Borough Council, held on Wednesday, Mr. Sturrock's report on the proposal to take the water main along Pembroke Road, involving an additional expenditure of £14,000, was read. Mr Sturrock did not think that the advantages warranted the additional expenditure. Cr. Cameron, in criticising the report, said that the pressure on November 17th was 25 to 501bs, on the 25th from 30 to 351bs, and that morning at 11 o'clock it was 551bs. It was clear that the pressure was quite inadequate for fire lighting purposes. With regard to the quality of the water, he contended that the higher they went up the river the less impurities they would have to deal with, for they would escape a certain amount of drainage from farms. The Mayor: That is quite conceded. Cr. Cameron said that by going further up, as he suggested, a saving of about £BOOO for a filter bed, settling tank and pipe line could be effected, greatly reducing the estimated cost of extending the line. Mr. Sturrock dealt with the various points raised by Cr. Cameron. It was eventually decided to adopt Mr. Sturroek's scheme, after, making provision for extending the mains as required by the enlarged area approved for the drainage scheme.
