WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) m Nov. 27. The Waitara School baths were in use by the children for the first timethis season on, Tuesday last. The matter of purchasing a club room for the Returned Soldiers' Association was discussed at a meeting held on Tuesday night, and it was decided to defer a decision till Tuesday next, when a definite proposal in respect to finance Will be made. Messrs. Canton, Proctor, and Edwards tendered their resignations as members of the executive, as they were leaving the district, and Mr. H. Brabant was appointed secretary in place of Mr. Canton. Messrs. R. Baker and H. Jury were elected to fill the other two vacancies. A meeting of the Labor Day Sports Committee was held on Monday evening to receive and adopt the balance-sheet of the sports meeting. Only approximate figures were given, as there were still some accounts to pay out. The net results were close to' £SO. The band was voted £3 3s. Messrs. Proctor, Spurdle, and W. H. Nosworthv were anpointed a sub-committee to wait on the Dorough Council with an offer to hand over the balance from the sports, together with the money received from the sale of badges, making about £7O, if the Borough will subsidise it £ for £ to take the hill away and improve the approach to the reserve. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladieV, who had worked for the fund, and on sports day, and to those who had given donations. A special meetihg of the Borough Council to consider the position of the Electric Light Department was held last evening. Cr. Ogle said that the ques-' lion of a house for the electrical engineer must be considered, as he had r.nly three days* tenancy of the house he getting another. A proposition had been made by the engineer that the council should grant him the running of the plant, the council to pay him £450, and be to find the labor required and do ordinary repairs'. All material to be found by the Council, and the cost.of all breakages to be paid by them. The concession to be for 17 months; stqeW to be taken over by the engineer, and the profits from the sstfe, of stock to be his; also profit from putting in installations. 'Cr. Ogle said that the plant was in a deplorable condition, and under its present form it was not possible to make it pay. In his opinion- « would be better if the whole plant were blown op and a new plant put in, at any rate, if they wished to retain the services of the engineer some concession wou}d have to be made. After a long discussion, it was resolved that the Council regrets that the proposal cannot be accepted, as it is not in the best interests of the council. The sale of house property in Waitara is still going on at a rapid rate, several sales having been effected in the last few weeks.
