BOXING.
HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT. The Assembly Hall of the New Plymouth Boys' High School was crowded last night, the occasion being the annual boning tournament. Mr. Moyes, the principal, supervised the proceedings. Mr. Dunlop officiated as referee, and Mr. Ryder was timekeeper. The boxing, gonerally, was good, the footwork of the lads, Hutchen and Pavis, being very neat, whiltßt the defensive tactics of Jackson and Mcßae were also elective. Osborne gave the best all-round exhibition, and had an easy win in the final. Details:— Under sst.—Fookes defeated Cirey, « Under Ost.—lst heat: Hutchen had an easy win against McNeill./ 2nd heat: Corney was much too good for Hardwick. Final: Hutchen gave a good display in tliis bout, the third round making him an easy winner. Under 7st.*-lst heat: Davis scored a knock-out against McMahon. 2nd heat: Jackson defeated Seanlan. 3rd heat; Davis met Newell, and, after a strenuous bout, which went, the three rounds, the former was declared the winner. Final: This was another line bout, Davis meeting Jackson. The.latter received a lot of punishment, but had to submit to defeat. Under Bst: Candy met G. Fookes, but in the second round the latter tossed the towel. Final: Candy met Jonas, but the latter, who was on the defensive throughout, was outclassed,' Candy having an easy win. - Under Ost.—• This was a good "go." In the first round, Hugh'son appeared the better boxer, -but made up the leeway in the, second round, the final decision going to Hughson. j Under lOst 71bs.—C. Smart defeated j Ellis .in a dull bout, Ellis being very slow and Smart very cautious. Second round: Mcßae gained the verdict over Hair, but there was little difference between the boys. Third round: Smart had a comfortable win against Foden. The latter put up a good fight, but was out-gen-eralled. In the final, Mcßae met Smart. The opening was very quiet, but, urged by the barrackers, Mcßae livened up considerably, but the referee had no difficulty in making Smart the winner. Over lOst 71b.~-Osborne v. Willis: This proved a very strenuous battle, both boys being done to a turn when the bout finished, a close verdict going to Osborne. Final: Osborne v. Noakes: In this bout the former led throughout, Noakes receiving heavy punishment. In the final round he was floored twice, the second time taking the count.
