TRAMWAY WORKERS.
HIGHER PAY DEMANDS NEW PLYMOUTH INVOLVED. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Wellington, Last Night. A conference of representatives of municipal- authorities and private companies controlling tramways in New Zealand concluded to-day, and a set of counter-proposals was drawn up for submission to the Tramwaymen's Federation. In the afternoon ft joint conference was held between the controlling authorities and representatives of the Tramwaymen's Federation. The Mayor of Wellington was appointed chairman. Proposals submitted by the men's representatives provided for grouping the Dominion into three parts, comprising (1)' Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill and New Plymouth; (2) Auckland and Wanganui; and (3) Wellington. The object of the grouping system was to de« terminc the rates of pay proportionately to the cost of living in the various centres, as well aa to meet the varying conditions in the conduct of the tramway services. The joint conference will resume tot morrow.
