TO THE ELECTORS OF NEW Ladies and Gentlemen, On Wednesday next, December .'!, you I ill be asked to elect a citizen to fill the I Vacancy on the Borough Council. In re- : fiponse to the request of many ratepayers, and on the nomination of ihe New Plymouth Branch of the New Zealand Labor Party, I am standing for the seat. If elected I shall oppose the introduction of the one-man tram system. Could it be proved that the trams could lie run efficiently, with no danger to the public, no delays in the service, and no abnormal strain on the one man in charge of the car, then I see no reason for opposing its introduction, but after hearing the evidence at the Magisterial Enquiry I am satisfied that the system would not be efficient —would be a serious source of danger to the public, a constant cause of annoyance to those using the cars, and an abnormal strain on the man in charge of the car. "The potentialities of the Borough Electrical Department are enormous and I would help forward the work to the best of my ability, biit I strongly oppose the making of large profits which, arc in turn transferred to the ordinary account of the Council for the benefit of a few of the people. The profit of £(W!I7 I (is (id transferred last year should have been held in the electrical ae?ounts and the lighting charges, out of which the profits were made, should have been reduced. I shall advocate and help forward any scheme for the benefi. of the people that will relieve the present shortage of houses. The urgent necessity of ensur- i ing a full supply of milk throughout the year should be attended to at once by the Council ar.d I will give the matfer attention if elected. In conclusion I wish to point out that all thinkers now agree that out of the present darkness and confusion will come a world of more stab* order IF understanding prevails. No understanding *s possible whilst the workers are unrepresented on the Councils w..ich govern local conditions. The Council will be strengthened by a first-hand knowledge of the working man's point of view. And whilst the present uncertain conditions prevail in industrial, political, and social life, then one who lives continually in close touch with manual workers will be of good service on the Borough Council. For these reasons I fjlicit your support on Wednesday next. . Yours faithfully, W. H. FTTZPATRfCK. PITZROY SCHOOL CARNIVAL THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4th.
