MANGAHAO HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.

SLOW* PROGRESS. Palmerston N., Nov. 24. At the annual meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce this evening Mr. E. H. Crabb, chairman of the Mangahao Hydro-Electrie League, reporting on the matter, said that the scheme was going along slowly. The league had formulated certain questions to be put to candidates for Parliamentary honors who were standing for districts which would be served by the scheme, and it was onfy in cases where replies were favorable that candidates would get the support of the league. He had come to the conclusion that the work should be carried out under a separate board of works. He knew that there was a deal of dissatisfaction amongst the workmen at the prices being paid for some o( the small contracts, and men were always leaving the job. He pointed out that the whole of the money required for hydro-electric works in the North Island, some six million pounds, had now been voted, and there was nothing in the way of the works being carried out. The engineers in charge of the Mangahao scheme had expressed themselves as satisfied that they ecuhl complete the work in three years. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Crabb for the good work done by him a3 chairman of the league.
