MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr. Jas. Clarke), Crs. W. 1?. Short, K L. Parkin, V. Griffiths, A. S. Brooker, J. W. Hayden, W. A. Collipj and the general manager (Mr. I<\ T.' Bellringer). MT. BYRON RESERVE. In response to the Couneirg request, the curator of the Pukekura Park (JI. W. W. Smith) submitted a report on the Mt. Bryon reserve embodying suggestions for clearing, fencing, and planting the same'. 3 CLEAN-UP DAY. In regard to the proposal for a genreal clean-up day, which was referred to the engineer, Mr. Cook reported that he could not see his way to provide the the necessary teams for clearing away the sudden accumulation ot growth which would have to be coped with if a large number of people were allowed to clear oyer the paths in front of their properties. The engineer said that to allow any person not used to chipping off surface growth, won hi possibly lead to more danger to paths, and in many streets greater loss of gravel, than could be made good again this season. There Is a knack in using a shovel for this purpose, which cannot be attained with a Bpade, and few persons have a broad mouth shovel sharpened almost to razor keenness such as is required. The general manager stated that the amount available for water extensions was £875, less .£201) allocated to the Prankley Road extension. The engineer reported upon applications for extensions in Burns street (Dartmoor), Waiwaka Terrace, Belt' Road, Gaine Street, Hobsort Street. A petition, signed by 11 residents of Mission Hill (-South Road), : was received, asking for an extension of the mains to their properties. One of the petitioners offered to contribute from £l2 to £l4 towards the cost. The matters were referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to give relief wherever possible. WAITARA-TE KUITI RAILWAY. The Cliff on County Council forwarded a copy of the following resolution passed at a public meeting at Okau on October 10th.. and asked' Hie Borough to support tiie same: That in the opinion of (his meeting of settlers in the Okau district, it is in the best interests of the district that a railway route should be surveyed and latnr authorised: and that, the counties of Awakino. Clifton, and Waitomo, be asked to form themselves into a railway league for the furtherance of the proposal. The Mayor said he thought if was very important to get a railway opened through that district, and he moved that the Council support the proposal. Cr. ffavden seconded the motion; which was carried. GENERAL. The tender of Messrs. Triggs and .Denton (Christchureh), was accepted for the supply of dog collars at !)'/■;d each. It was decided to notify Mr. W. ,T. floneyfleld that his request that the Council should construct a new street through his property at his cost, be referred to the Public Works Committee, the Sub-Committee of Management to enter into negotiations with Mr. Honeyfield and report. Consideration of a letter from Mr. M. 0. Butcher requestino- the asphalting' of a footpath in Gill Street, and the formation of Ballance Street, was deferred. Mr. N. G. Roebuck was given permission to lower the path in front of his property in Watson Street, at his own expense subject to the approval ot the borough engineer. It was decided to inform Messrs. T. Sole and L. H. Johnson that the Council could not see its way to lower the footpath in front of their properties in Leach Street at present. The Council approved the names submitted by the Kawaron Park Committee as the executive responsible to the Council for the control of the reserve.
