DISTRICT NEWS.
WAITOITOI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a fair- attendance in the schoolroom on Friday evening . last, when Mr. Perkins, of Waitara, gave his customary fortnightly address. Though tho busy season is now on, tho interest in tlii3 gentleman's visits continues, the younger ones especially hardly ever failing to put in an appearance. Dairymen aro now busy getting the land ready for autumn feed, without which the producers of butter-fat decline to keep up the supply of milk which makes the 20th of each month a day to be looked forward to. Various kinds of crops are constantly being Iried and each year one hears of fresh grasses or roots which aro claimed to be the best. Japanese millet is having a great run at prcseut, it being most in favor with tho majority because it does not entail tho labor of feeding out, and yet gives fair results. Red Paragon turnips are highly spoken of, and seem to contain a wonderful amount of feed per acre, v Thou again, there are not wanting many astute judges who consider that a good paddock of paspalum is the best asset of the lot, as, besides providing rich and succulent pasture for tho cattle during the dry period, a crop of hay or ensilage can bo taken off it before it Is necessary to use it for grazing. Tho horse Is being superseded by motor power year after year, and in the not very distant future will be rarely met wltn as [ rti-rnrds team and farm work. Messrs S. Sutton and Grelg, of this district, are both doing ploughing, etc., by means of motor power, and by all accounts other farmers will not be long in following their lead. : ' Mi'. C. Musker, who recently purchased Mr. J. 1;. Siy's property, is making extensive Improvements to bis residence, which, vhen completed, will make it most convenient and attractive. The work is being carried out by Mr. D. Wyllie, of Urenui. I It is reported that one or two *>f our local sports threw in for a modest win ovor the Taranak! horse. Depredation, who won the Mltchclson Cup at the recent Auckland meeting, but Gay Lad's defeat in the big money at Rlccarton caused the boat to rock somewhat for a good many of those who rather fancy picking doubles. A number of trotting enthusiasts are looking forward to the newlyformed Taranakl Trotting Club's meeting, and thero is some talk of this end being represented in one or two of the events.
