PERSONAL.
Dr. H. B. Leatham left for Christchurch yesterday morning in order to be present at the recital which Miss Leatham is to give there to.-morrow night. Captain H. B. Pattrick, M.0., who lias been spending a short holiday with his relatives in New Plymouth, left yesterday morning for Wellington, where he intends to settle and go into business. A Pekin cable message states that the Duke Kurig, the 74th lineal descendant of Confucius, has died. The President has awarded 1000 dollars for his funeral expenses. , Mr. P.. A. Openshaw, of Lepperton, is leaving shortly on a visit to England. .He will be accompanied by Mrs Openshaw. The appointment of Mr. John Collins to the post of secretary of Industries and Commerce is announced. Mr. Collins, who has been secretary of the Board of Trade since its establishment, will now be chief administrative officer of the new Department of Industries and Commerce, created under the Board of Trade Act passed last session.-—Press Association.
