EMPLOYERS' ASSOCIATION.
THE ANNUAL RE-UNION-FEW LOCAL TRADE DISPUTES. The annual re-union dinner and meeting of the Taranaki Employers' Assoc.ation was held at the Waratah Dining Rooms last night. Mr. J. W. Haydeii (president) occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of about 40 members. The annual report stated that the annual accounts showed a deficiency in connection with the working of the night-watchman. The position had been brought about by the fact that several members leaving the town had ceased to be subscribers, while those coming in had not shown much interest in the matter. That the services of the nightwatchman were absolutely necessary could not be gainsaid and it was this fact which impelled the executive to ileal with the question shortly after the close of the financial year. It was decided to raise the subscriptions payable, ftnd to apply the increase to (1) Making up the deficiency; and (2) In granting an increase in wages to the nightwatchman. In spite of his excellent work there were tradesmen in the town who did not think it worth while to eontribute. Trade Disputes.—On this matter tlft report stated: The year has not been fraught with many trade disputes in our district, but the New Zealand Federation has had to deal with some very difficult problems. The Grocers Assistants' Award was, however, fought out before the Conciliation Commissioner and a decision was arrived at which appears to be favorable to both parties. While we have been singularly fortunate in this respect yet the .correspondence tvhioh passes between the New Zealand Federation of Employers and this Association, cannot but show what a great deal of work is being done for us by our parent body. SCOPE OP THE ASSOCIATION.
An endeavour was made to increase the scope of the Association to the whole of the province- With this end in view visits were paidto all the large towns" in the province. Inglowood was visited and practically every employer was enrolled as a member of the Association. The railway cut and pressure of private business prevented Hnwera and Stratford being reached. Realising the riilficulty "f organising these towns without devoting a great deal of time an endeavour was made to obtain the services of an organiser to do these districts, but without success. In spite of this it was found that the membership was increasing and the increase would he greater if employers generally wouM realise the duty they owe to their lciu.-. employers, the workers- themselves, anri the future prosperity of this Dominion. The relationship between employer and employee at the present time was not such as would lead to that increased efficiency which was necessary if the Empire was to solve successfully the after-war problems. Problems could not be solved by maintaining a spirit of indifference, and it behoved the employer to establish that relationship with his employees which was sound both economically and nationally. The chairman moved the l adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, which was seconded by Mr. P. E. Stainton and carried without discussionELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. J. W. Haydcn (reelected) ; vice-president, Mr. P. E. Stainton: executive. Messrs. F. Clay, ■!'. ,)'. White. W. Ambury. R. J. Deare, V. W Okev. A E. Svkes.' .T. McNeill. 0. Carter, C. E. Baker. W- C. Weston, and W. Sole ( auditor, Mr. E. P. Webster. \ cry eulogistic references were made to the work of Mr. Ilayden as president, find ]>U unanimous re-election was carvied with acclamation. The election of Mr. Stainton as vice-president, was also tnthusiastically applauded. FEDERATION MATTERS. Mr. Haydcn then gave a resume of the doings of the conference of the New Zealand Employers' Federation held recently in Wellington, and spoke of some of .the chief features of the present unsettled condition of the industrial wor.d He dealt principally with the position on the waterfronts and in the mines, flnd subsequently moved the follnwinir resolution: "That this meeting of the Taranaki Employers' Association endorses the action of the Federation in their endeavour to substitute a system of permanent employment on the waterfront of the Dominion for the present unsatisfactory conditions."
Mr. Stainton seconded the motion, and in doing so, snid it was a recognised fact that the best service in Nov; Zealand so far as the watersiders were con-' cerned was received at New Plymouth. He thought this was to the credit of the local men, and efforts should be made to ensure a continuance of that service. After some discussion, the resolution was carried unanimously. RELATIONS WITH EMPLOYEES. A further discussion then took place on the matter of more cordial relationship between employers and employees, especially in the direction of providing against sickness and for superannuation. The discussion was based on a short paper on the subject read by Mr. Mayden, who at the conclusion'moved, tile following resolution, which was seconded by Mr. P. J. White, and carried: '-'That in the opinion of this Association, the time has_ arrived when the employers of the Dominion must recognise that a now order of relationship between individual employers and their workers must b« established, g.wl to this end it is advisable that each teidir sleet representatives to constitute a committee to elaborate a scheme which will have, for its object to promote industrial pea«e in this Dominion, this committee to report to a special meeting of the New Zealand Federation within six months." During the evening very ciijovaMe solos were rendered by Messrs. N.' Day und R. X. Renaiul," the Uuter also playing the accompaniments. At the conclusion of the business the liealth of the chairman was enthusiastically drunk, and the meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
