THE HIGH SCHOOLS.
MONTHLY MEETING OF THE BOARD. Tkc ordinary meeting of the New-Ply-mouth High Schools Board was held last night, when there were present Messrs L. C. Sladden (chairman), H. Trimble, J. S. Fox, E. A. Washer, E.' P. Webster, L A. Nolan, I<\ W. Atkinson, S. U. Smith. M.P., and Dr. Fookes. Mr. F. W. Atkinson, a former member of tlie Board, who was re-appointed to the Board in succession to Mr A. H. Johnstone (resigned), was welcomed to the Board by the chairman. THE FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported havmet on the question of providing a sick room and further laundry accommodation; also for a matron. It was resolved that Mr. Bates be authorised to confer with Mr, Moyes and prepare rough plans and estimates for suggested hutment for sick room accommodation and additions to laundry. It was later resolved, after receipt of Mr. Bates' estimates, that it be a recommendation to the Board that applications be again made to the Department for grants to enable the Board to build sick room accommodation and laundry at the estimate of £llOO each. Recommendations were also made regarding the proposed salaries to be paid to the staffs of tho schools. The committee also recommended that the Board should now consider what steps should be taken to urge upon the Government the absolute necessity for some assistance being given to enable the Board to meet its obligations. The report was adopted and the matter of making representations to the Government was referred to the chairman and secretary. THE GIRL'S SCHOOL. The principal of the Girls' High School reported that no appointments had been made to the vacancies on the staff, caused by the resignations of Misses Fairbrother and Lennon, and suggested that the positions should be advertised at the higher salaries,—Adopted. THE FARM. The Agricultural Committee submittP(l its annual balance-sheet respecting the farm account for the year endin" September 27th., liftli, which showed a credit, balance of £243 6s 3d. The farm acocunt showed that receipts totalled £403 Cs fld (sale of milk, 3755 gallons at 1/S, £315 ss, 23 pigs, 22151bs bacon 1/2s, £13(5 10s fid, 1100 cabbages £22 10s, swedes, carrots, parsnips £l-2 las, potatoes £fi), Expenditure totalled £23fl 3s 4d, the principal items being wages £lOl, rent £ls, seeds, manure, stock, etc., £7O 16s. There was a loss on stock of £23 17s. The stock on the farm now consisted of six cows, one horse and 27 pigs valued at £303 19s. GENERAL. It was resojved that Mr. F. VV. Atkinson be appointed a member of the Agricultural Committee. During a discussion on the finance committer s report regarding the raising of the salaries of the teachers of the schools in order to bring them in conformity with the regulations, reference was made to the excellent work done bv the secretary (Mi\ E. Lash) and it was unanimously resolved to increase his salary by £SO per annum as from January next.
