SUPREME COURT.
BREACH OF PROMISE CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ohristchurch, Nov. 17. Evelyn Mabel Smith, spinster, Christchurch, sued Eric Edward Smith, engineer, Taihape, before Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Count to-day for £SOO damages for breach of promise of marriage. The case was undefended and plaintiff stated that she and defendant became engaged when ho went away in the Main Body. He sent her a ring from Cairo and also numerous letters. He stayed with her family at Taihape when ha came back to New Zealand and seemed anxious to marry her. Later he broke off the engagement saying that a "subtle change" had come over him. The jury awarded £250 damages, with cost 3 on the middle scale.
