ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Hltliam, Nov. 15. The Tennis Club opened tlieir season on Thursday afternoon. There was a good attendance, and the membership shows a decided improvement on last year. The local branch of the C.E.M.S. held a meeting at All Saints' schoolroom on Friday evening, when a lecture was delivered by the Rev. W. Bullock, who has been appointed organiser to the Society in the Dominion. The lecturer, who has served with the British Expeditionary Force, took as his subject "The Returned Soldier, The Citizen, and Christianity." The subject was well handled, and at the conclusion he was accorded S hearty vote of thanks. This is the first, meeting held of the Society for a long time, and many of the members were beginning to think it was defunct.. Another effort to revive the old Cricket Club will be made on Tuesday evening, when a meeting will be held at Mr. Buekeridge's room- It is to be hoped a little more enthusiasm will be shown this time. The social and presentation of medals at Ra.witrna on Friday evening was a vided success. There was a record at'eiidnnce. and after a concert programme (>v performers from round the district, including one from Hawera. Mr. Bleakley fehifirman) asked Mr. Taylcr, Mayor of Eltham, to present to the returned soldiers and relatives of those killed in action the gold medals subscribed for by the settlers of the district.. Mr. Taylor referred to the need of recognising the sacrifices made by tile men, who had left their homes and lost, in mativ instance, their nhanse in life,
No opportunity should be lost in assisting and honoring them, and making due allowance for all they had undergona The Roll of Honor was then called. It contained 22 names, and Miss Bleakley pinned the medals 011 the soldiers who were present to receive them. The hall ii'ared for dancing, which was kept up till the small hours in the morning, everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves. Supper was served in a large marquee outside and the committee arc to be commended 011 the admirable arrangements. The contractor for the new "co-op." building is losing no time. All the old building has been moved back, and the foundations arc being laid out- The men are working 10 hours a day, and teams are busy with metal, etc. j
