The High Court, in a test case, decided that the State authorities acted outside their powers in closing hotels during the late epidemic, and quashed the conviction of a hotelkeeper who failed to obey the closing order. The decision is important, involving extensive claims. FEDERAL NOMINATIONS. Melbourne, Nov. 15. Nominations for the elections to the Federal House and Senate have closed. There are inflated lists of candidates of various parties, including a considerable number of Independents. HEAVIER RAIN WANTED. Sydney, Nov. 15. Light rain is now almost general, though much heavier falh are required to relieve the drought areas. DEMAND FOR WHEAT. Melbourne, Nov. 15. There is an increasing demand for sec-ond-grade wheat. Japan is buying at 7s 5d and New Zealand ia among the inquirers. EXPELLING UNDESIRABLES. Brisbane, Nov. 15. A meeting of citizens in the Properine district resolved to expel a number of undesirable's who are fomenting unrest and strikes, thereby holding up the sugar industry and interfering with business generally. The undesirables have been ordered to leave forthwith, otherwise they will be deported. The farmers have decided to cut no more sugar-cane until the undesirables have left.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
