I Received Nov. 14, 7.45 p.m. London, Nov. 13. .Addressing the Colonial Institute on the subject of Empire food production, the Controller referred to the difficulties ■of the food supply due to the small 'home production and our lark of organisation. As regards Empire supplies, consumption was out-distancing production. The. wfioln question of supplies must he reconsidered and the possibilities of Empire production should be placed in the forefront. He was awSre that trusts already had a foothold in certain Dominions, but by hringanj; the Dominions closer in trade the Motherland we could devise methods to enable the DommioDß to relieve themselves of the menace ofHruats.
Lord Milner, who presided, said that he was not sure that we could obtain everything required from the Empire. Although he was an Imperialist he did 'not want'to live in a hermitieallv sealed 'Empire. Contrariwise, he.-believed that a greater development of Imperial tra'do would mean a greater increase of foreign _ trade, but" if we retained command of the sea and had proper economic development within the Empire we should be safeguarded against the interraption of supplies of food rnd raw materials. Lord Milner addo." that he believed in the League of Nations, but he wan-not prepared to stake everything upon it? immediate success. After all, the British Empire would supply the driving force in the League, and the lies* war of providing for Ahis was-to enable the Empire to be self-supporting.—Renter Service.
