TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting of tho Turanakl Education Board was held at the Board's office yesterday, there being present Messrs It. Masters (chairman), H. Trimble, 1". .T. 11. Wliito, H. J. Eaves, H. H. Grayling, A. Lees, and s! O. Smith, MP. Before commencing tho ordinary business of tho Board the chairman welcomed Sir. Lee's as the representative of the Soutli Ward. Mr. Masters said he had had a considerable amount of association with .Mr. Lees and was satisfied his presence would he an asquisition to the Board, and his knowledge of the general conditions in South Taranakl would he of (treat value to the Board in administering the affiars of that part of the district. Mr. Lees suitably replied. He said lie recognised the responsibility of tho position and would do his best not only for the South Ward, but for the whole of Taranaki. TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS. The chairman reported having made the following temporary appointments during the month:— Carrington, assistant, Miss N. Hayes; Hawera, assistant., Miss S. Sole; Kaimata, assistant. Miss S. Sole; Oknhtikura, sole teacher, Miss M. Rhynd; Manaia. assistant. Miss M. Bnyde; Waiau. sole teacher, Mr. G. Graham; Douglas, assistant, iMiss A. Altken; Tikorangi, bead teacher, Mrs M. Woods; MangoreL Upper, sole teacher, Mr. V. Stanton; Hawera, assistant, Miss E. Guilford; Mangatoki, head teacher. Miss F. Hardy; Puniho, head teacher, Mrs Dawson; Central, third assistant, Miss E. D. Leech; Plko, sole teacher, Miss E. Jupp. RESIGNATIONS AND LEAVE OP ABSENCE. Tho following teachers' resignations were accepted; Miss E. Parli, Kaimata; Miss J. T. Graham, Waiau; Mr. E. Bary, West End (New Plymouth), Mr. C. Harford, jJYaitaanga. The following teachers were granted leave of jbsence on account of illness;— Mr. J. B. Main (Stratford), one week; Miss E. Burkhart (Ahititi), two weeks;. Mr. E Bary, assistant (West End. New riymouth)! two weeks; Miss K. Tobin (Marco), two weeks ; Miss G, Barak (Turoto), one week; Mrs. M. B. Evans (Puniho), one week; Miss H. Drader (Tahora), to visit America; and Miss 0 L. Ducker (Frankley), for -matriculation examination. TEACHERS' SELECTION COMMITTEE. The Teachers' Selection Committee made the following recommendations for appointments Stratford, ninth assistant, Miss E Parrott; Hawera, seventh assistant. Miss E. Satorl, eighth assistant, Miss C. Slander, ninth and tenth assistants, applications to be called; To Klri, assistant, Miss E Farquhar; Lepperton, assistant, fresh applications to ha called; Warea, assistant. Miss A. Flommlrig; West End, first assistant, the following names to be submitted to tho Committee: Messrs E H. Rowntree and C. 11. Strack; Okahukura, sole teacher, Miss C. E Orr; Mangorei Upper, sole teacher. Miss L. Pridcaux; Waitul, sole teacher Mr. O. Ralph; Carrington, assistant, Miss M Rlewman; Kaimata, assistant, Miss Fitzgerald' Mr. Smith explained that in regard to the appointment at West End. the committee considered it highly desirable that there .should be at least one male assistant. If a lrdy teacher was appointed to till Mr. Bary's place tho school would he without a male assistant tvhlcli would not he in the best interests of a school such as West. End. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The following report by the Finance Committee was adopted:— That the Mokoia School Committee be informed that grants made hy the Board for the purpose of supplying school children with hot cocoa were primarily intended for the. winter months only, and that the Board regrets .hat it has no fund 3 available to subsidise -he cost of supplying hot cocoa throughout tiio year. GENERAL. It was decided to apply to the Department for the re-oponlng of tho Whenuakura School from the beginning of the next scliool year. The Board decided to apply for a gri'.nt for the extension of one of tho class r::oms at Toko by 10ft in order to. relievo the overcrowding in the preparatory classes. The senior inspector (Mr, A, J. Morton) reported on tho matter of the Dominion arithmetic text books for the two lower standards being not now Tdcofcntaed' as included in tho authorised test. A new edition would in all probability be published al an early date. struction had so recently been held the Board did not consider it necessary for clusses to be held at the close of the summor vacation. It was decided to inform Mrs, Galley that after careful consideration, the Board had decided on a site for the proposed school at Ohura, about 200 yards from the junction of the Ohura and Upper Ohura Roads, and that as soon as the freehold had been acquired a school would be erected.

The -action of the Kaponga and. Mldhirs* School Committees in dosing the . schools on account of diphtheria was approved. It. was decided to grant £3 towards the cost of fencing to provide a horse paddock at the Knhui School. Matters affecting repairs, etc., to the following schools or residences wero referred to the architect: Waitara (fencing residence), rungarehu (painting and repairing school), Tokirima (additional tank), and Kaimata (sundry repairs and asphalting school grounds). It was decided to inform the Newall Committee that the Department would not enter* tain an application for a grant for the erection of a resldcnco whilo the school is in its present grade. In reference to tho proposed site for a school at Moturon, it was resolved to inform the Department that the Board approves tho a : tc of four acres on the Prison Reserve' a&re'«i upon by Mr. Bullard during tho visit of Mr Spencer, and that, the Department ho urged 1 to make every endeavour to acquire the site. | It was decided to make application for a j grant ot acquire two acres of land for a I school sites at Ilurlmoana, being part of Section 10, Block 10, Pouatu Survey District. Permission was given for the erection of a memorial to fallen soldiws in the Normanby School grounds, provided the site is approved by the Board's architect. The Riverlea Committee was given permission to cut down trees at the dangerous portion of the school grounds. It was also decided to make an amended application for a grant for improvaments to the school porch at Riverlea. "Mr. Lees was appointed a member of the Reserves and Finance Committee. The following appointments to the School Committees were approved: Durham, Mr. J. P. Flint,off; Te Kiri, Messrs. Freer, Cox, and Griffin; Mimi, Mr. G. Baker; Maatu, Mr. L Ayres. Mr. Trimblo gave notice to move that the Ihe Board being of opinion that a third inspector Is permanently needed in the district, protests against the continued employment of Mr. Dempsey as an inspector. Accounts amounting to £7313 4s 3d were passed for payment.
