WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)' November 11. I hear that the takings (net) from the ball given by the freezing works employees in aid of the funds of the two seaside societies and the Tennis Club, total more than £IOO. The Clifton Lodge of Druids gave a banquet last night in St. John's Hall to welcome home members of the lodge who had been to the front. The catering was in the capable hands of Mrs. Sutherland, who gave a really fine spread. The lmll and tables were beautifully decorated. There were a number of visiting Druids present, and a very pleasant evening was passed. About 80 guests sat down to Bupper and the function did not close until about 2 a.m. Harry Dearth and company had a very good house and those present were well satisfiedSeaman George Laing, son of Mr. J. W. Laing, is at present home on leave. He is wearing the bars showing that he has put in five years' service, and I understand he is going to remain in the navy- for some time yet. At the school committee meeting last night, Mr. Wyllie, headmaster, reported that the average attendance for the month was: Boys 148, girls 161.1, total 315.1. Five boys and two girls had been admitted, and one girl withdrawn during the month. The roll number is 339. The headmaster, referring to Dr. Gunn's visit, said that from personal knowledge he would say that Dr. Gunn's visit had done mucli good, and parents ought to be grateful for what she had done for some of the children, and in all cases she had treated the children with the greatest kindness. He reported that the shelter sheds and asphalt round the school needed repairing, and the secretary was instructed to get it done ii possible. It was decided to hold the annual concert, and to give the usuai prizes for attendance. Messrs Ford, Huse and Annis were appointed a committee to procure prizes.-
