MONTHLY MEETING, j The ordinary meeting of the Hawera County Council was hold at Hawera on Saturday, when there were ptesent: Crs C. J. Ilaivken (chairman), R. J, Linn, E. Washer, B. C. Lysaght, A. Larcon, R. Douglas, and \V. Williams. FOREMAN'S REPORT. Tha foreman (Mr. A. Muggeridge) reported as follows: Skeet ltoad—Tills road has been scarified, stones knapped, regraded, and rollod from Kapuni lirldge to Ahipaipa. Road. L Ahipaipa Road.—The uneven portions are now being attended to on this road. It should he ready ' for tar in about a month's lime. A bin has been erected for the lorry 10 take shingle from cu the Whareroa Road. 3 Main South Road.—The teams have been de--1 livering shingle in readiness for tarring from the toil gate towards tho Scott Road. Austin Road.—Metal for tho hill that was auhorised will bo, laid in position as opportunity occurs. Whareroa Road.—On this road tho lorry lias delivered about SO yards or metal to reface a very weak place of seven chains. ■ Tangahoo Uridge.—There are about 17 000 feet of timber at the site in readiness for' the erection of this bridge, but there are still 9001) feet short. Something will have to be Hone With regard to this or else the bridge j WU not be built by nest winter. BOUNDARY ROADS COMMITTEE. The Boundary Roads Committee, consisting of Messrs. Linn and Hawken (County Council) Dixon, Cameron, and Morrissey (Borough Council), recommended that the Borough tar tha footpath in front of the school, also that -the committee 13 agreeable to work being done in respect of iootpath on tho Borough mae of tliß South Road for about 15 chains east of Gladstone Street at a cost of not exceeding Matters of rubbish removal and engineer's report re destructor were discussed, and the general opinion was that oach. He did not t,iink the Council would join in with the Borough in getting a desructor, because in the near future he thought the thickly populated portion outside the borough would join the borough and there would be no need for a destructor in the county. The report was confirmed. A REQUEST DECLINED. The Hawera Borough Council asked the Council to remit the amount of rates due on the Turuturu-Mokoia pah (scenic reserve) and Turutiii'u-Miokora, redoubt (historic ' reserve), and to also treat these reserves as non-rate- ? in future. 1 The letter pointed out that trees had been planted and most of the land fenced off, leaving very little for grazing and thus reducing the revenue avallablo for improvements. The clerk pointed out that the Harbor Board had agreed to remit rates. On the motion of Crs Lysaght and Washer It was resolved that the request be not acceded to. DEPUTATIONS. Settlers of the Ngawhinl Road, Ararata forwarded a pcti'ion asking that the road, which was now dangerous and almost Impassable, should be put into good condition Messrs. R. Buckley and Jas. Winks waited on the Council In support. Cr. LaTcon said that tho road was in a shocking state. There were high boxthorn hedges on each side, and in some places there were holes right across the road Tlie chairman held that the cutting of the hedges would considerably improvo the road Sir. Buckley admitted this, but pointed out that there was 110 outlet for tho water, and tho road was impassable to foot passengers and dangerous to children riding to school Eighteen to twenty chains of metal would make a good road, over which a largo quantity of mlllt was carted. Tlie foreman stated it would cost £350 to do tho work. , TIIO chairman stated that the riding members favored the work being done, but it was a question whether the foreman could get it done—lt was resolved that the work bo done "The same old story," remarked Mr. Thompson who comprised one of a deputation of four asking that 14 chains, in two sections should bo metalled on tho Mangapou-Ohangai Road. Mr. Scott, he said, had agreed if the work was done, to pay his next year's rates at once. Mr. Thompson said that he would favor a special loan to get the road metalled Tho chairman said that they were anxious to do the best they could for the settlers but tho financial position had to be considered. The majority of ratepayers had an idea that the rates collected off their property should be spent on their own roads but he pointed out that of a total of £l7 500 rates levied, 110 less than £6500 was paid 11 interest and hospital and charitable aid . levy, and then tho main roads had to he kept up for the use of those living off them He promised that tho Council would do the best It could for the settlers. Wash as a Domain 1 Board to control the Ngutu-o-te-Manu domain ; It was resolved to endorse resolutions ' passed at a meeting of representatives of local ' bodies, dairy companies.
