ATTACK ON LORD FRENCH. LEADS TO HIS DISMISSAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received Nov. 9, 5.5 p.m. Loudon, Nov. 8. According to the Daily Express, with Cabinet's approval the Committee of Imperial Defence has dismissed Mr J. W. ''Fortescue from the position of official I historian of tho war in consequence of his strictures on Lord French in defence of ■aeneral Smith-Doitidn.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Mr- Fortescue, reviewing Lord French's book, "1914," in the Quarterly Review, made a sensational attack upun fjord French. He said: "This is one of the most unfortunate books ever written " Mr. Fortescue said that when General Grierson died, Lord French wanted General Plumer to succeed him, but Earl Kitchener preferred "to send General Smith-Dorrien, "Thereby hangs a sorry tale, and an unsavoury incident," wrote Mr. Fortescue. "It is a fact that in his despatcli ot September 7, Lord French gave General' SmithDorrien full credit for cool courage fhown in accepting battle at Le Cateau. Kow he would have us believe 'that General Smith-Dorrien was only opposed by cavalry."]
