CANTEEN MILLIONS
CAUTIOUS BEGINNING OP PLANS FOR DISTRIBUTON. Out of the £7,000,000 profits from th< British Expeditionary Force canteens Sir Julian Byng and the Committee o: the United Services Fund have decidec to allocate: £250,000 towards help foi disabled officers and men; £250,000 foi widows and dependents; £250,000 foi general welfare work among ex-service men in Greater London. The last of these items, it is stated, is of the nature of an experiment. The grant will he used for such things as the provision of clubs, and if it succeeds in Greater London the committee propose to make grants for similar purposes in other towns. Strong sub-committees have been appointed to administer the grants. It is proposed to work through existing organisations, but careful measures are taken to avoid waste and overlapping and to ensure that the money shall reach those whom it is' intended to benefit. The committee is anxious that exservice men shall themselves co-operate in the administration of the grants, and for this purpose it is made a condition of grants that organisations to which money is given shall in their committees consist of at least 25 per cent, of exservice men not officers. j It will be observed that £6,250,000 I still remains under the committee's control for distribution should the present "»£periment" prove successful.
