Mr. Carruther3 moved a vital amendment, providing that where the wages exceeded the Board of Trade's living wage declaration the increases granted by the court should diminish on a sliding scale until the amount of £350 yearly was reached. • Jfhis was carried by 18 votes to 14. [The Maintenance of Children's Bill imposes the duty upon the New South Wales Board of Trade of deciding annually the minimum cost of living for a nan and his wife, in lieu of the present standard of a man, and wife and two children. The hoard is then charged with the duty of declaring what u the cost of maintaining each child. Employers of labor will be required to tender retjurns of the number of their employees, male and female, together <with the number of children up to 14 yean of age dependent upon such employees. In addition to the minimum wage for a man and wife, each employer will have to pay to a special fund, created for the purpose, the additional cost of maintaining each ehild.' This fund •will be distributed monthly to the mothere of the families of wage-earners up to £9 per week. Provision is made for •ny logs which may be realised being Recouped out of consolidated revenue.]
