DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Tho branch of tho New Zealand Farmers'' I'nioji which has been formed in»the Warea district promises to become an important means of discussing mutters of interest to tho farmers of tho district, independent of the broader issues affecting tho welfare of the farming community as a whole. There is no disputing the fact that by meeting together and discussing things in general much benefit must accrue to any body, bo it fnrmer or otherwise. Industrialists iiavo long recognised tho value of unionism, but the farmer in the past has shown a remarkable apathy in this respect. There aro many farmers Jn surrounding districts that have neglected lo nut their names in as members, but as time goes on tho matter of membership will no doubt receive their just consideration j* . w ; r - , G «'W. manager of the local tllL » la \ y in tllo south on a holiday. In view'of the recent discussion in the House of Representatives concerning the desirability of equalising pensions to widows, It Is interesting to note the difference in the allowances made in ordinary cases and in cases where women were left widows by the influenza epidemic An ordinary widow gets, Including war bonus, £lB a year for the first child under fourteen years of age, and £l2 for each subsequent child under the same age. An epidemic widow, gets £2" lis a year for each child (girls under l(i years and hoys under 14 years), and she also gets £OS a year for herself, a provision which does not apply in the case of ordinary widows. So that for a widow with two children under the stipulated ages tho total would be £3O per annum In the case of tho ordinary widow, and £ll9 12s In the case of the epidemic widow.
